Poor mpg

I'm getting 26mpg in town driving in my wife's 2013 Auris 1.33. Is this normal?

Seems poor.

Does seem a bit low; What do you normally get?

Lots of stop-start traffic and short journeys can crater mpg, but that sort of thing usually hurts diesels more than petrols, and it's unusual for it to drop that low unless it's been stuck in lots of stationary traffic.

There is another possibility... but your wife's name isn't Danica/Jamie/Abbie perchance..?

Not sure what she normally gets as its my wife's car, used for school run and supermarket trips. A lot of stop/start traffic.

I was thinking of upgrading to an F31 BMW 320d Touring or Corolla 2.0 Hybrid Touring.

With that type of driving during freezing cold weather these sort of mpg are normal and will happen to every car, petrol, diesel, hybrid.
The best car for these short trips like school runs, short commute etc is a fully Battery electric car. If bev not suitable as one family car then any Toyota hybrid will do better than simply just a petrol or diesel car.
Toyota Prius plug in or rav4 plug in might also be a great choice as those can be charged of the plug and used as full ev on short drives. Corolla 2.0 it’s not the most efficient for your type of use, it’s better on motorways while the 1.8 Corolla it’s more economical in towns , Yaris or Yaris cross should also be on your list, these are ultra efficient cars.

Don't want a full electric car, doesn't need to be the most efficient as long as its significantly better than what we have. Fancied an F31 320d Touring but will still suffer from the same issue with short journeys.

I quite like the Corolla Estate or even a face lift Camry although the Corolla fits our needs better I'm strangely drawn  to the Camry. My friend bought one and its just such a relaxing and comfortable car to drive, irons out a lot of our crap roads.

Camry is indeed a really good car but remember it is too large for uk roads particularly if you live in towns and cities, it’s 5metre long.
Corolla estate will be much more suitable and easier to drive, although not as refined but still a good car. Diesel engine it’s a full stop for your use., perhaps it’s good for me but I never been a fan of these unless 5 or more cylinders and 2.5 or above engine size. Try a Corolla TS design spec or above and you will love it.

For that sort of use it might be normal then; I had the 1.33 in a Yaris and generally got mid-50s mpg if I tried to drive economically and mid-40s if I didn't, but that was on the same drive-cycle I got 60+ on my diesel and 75+ in the Mk4 from not driving economically!

I can imagine the 1.33's mpg dropping a lot if it's cold, in a lot of stop-start traffic and mostly short runs, as it's really gutless at the low-end.

Maybe the Auris body is too heavy for the little 1.33 engine
