This is smart and recommended action. Space saver spare wheels mounted on driving axle cause excess load to the differential gear and bearings and can cook the gear oil add extra heat and even cause irreversible damage to the transmission components. Always try to swap wheels  as per the Kevin example especially if you need to drive over 10 miles or more to get to your destination.
If you haven’t noticed whining noises when fitting a space saver to the drive axle you will probably next time. Also a good idea to check pressure and top up at least once a year because these tyres has higher pressure 55psi or more and if they are low the event I am talking about will be multiplied by much. 👍🛞

Another mote : some these space savers wheels need a different type of lug nuts, best to check owners manual. 👌

I forgot to mention my set up came with wheel nuts.

Looking for a space saver spare wheel for my new Yaris Cross GR sport, I came across this website 'Cheap Spare Wheels'  offering a 18" space saver for £189.95.

Should I go for this, or opt for the Toyota space saver kit, which is only 16"?

I am looking at these people when/if mine eventually arrives

17" SPACE SAVER SPARE WHEEL COMPATIBLE WITH TOYOTA YARIS CROSS 2021-PRESENT DAY | eBay

As for the genuine toyota item is that with a tyre and jack etc. As long as the rolling diameter is the same as your 18" wheel tyre combo it will fine as a get you home device.

As the Yaris Cross GR Sport comes with 18" wheels I was looking at:

18" Toyota Yaris Cross | Space Saver Wheel | The Wheel Shop

I'm a bit confused about sizes of space saver wheels as general advice states 'It is safe to use a 16″ space saver wheel on a car that has 18″ alloy wheels as long as the space saver is used temporarily and within the recommended speed limit.'

Thanks for your answer.

Quick question, as it's slightly larger than the Toyota version, does it fit into the boot recess?

As long as the profile is correct the rolling dia should be the same this site Tire Size Comparison comes up with the exactly the same rolling dia with the 205/65-16 and the 215/50-18 In the full size tyres, I imagine that the spacesaver rolling dia will be the same hence only the 16" being available.

The correct 16" steel rim is available for the Yaris Cross. However, instead of the standard 205/65R16 maybe look at a 215/60R16 to better match the 215/55R17 and 215/50R18 tyre sizes, when used as a spare. There's a better choice of tyres in the 215/60R16 tyre size compared to the standard 205/65R16 tyre size.

As you can see in the chart below, the outside diameter of these tyre sizes are very close to each other. Bear in mind that after 6mm of tread wear, a used tyre will have a diameter 12mm smaller than when new.

16" and 17" space saver tyres don't have a big enough outside diameter to match the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes. Do not use 16" and 17" space saver tyres on the Yaris Cross.

The only space saver tyre that is a good match to the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes is 135/80R18.

As you can see in the chart below, a 135/80R18 space saver tyre can be fitted to a rim width between 3.5J and 4.5J, with 3.5J being the standard rim width for this tyre size (and hence highlighted in bold).

ETRTO approved rim widths

135/80R18 3.5-3.5-4.5

However, if there's room it would be better to use a full-size spare such as the standard 205/65R16 tyre size or non-standard 215/60R16 tyre size, with either tyre size being fitted to the standard 6.5Jx16 ET45 5/114.3 60.1 rim.

As you can see in the chart below, both the standard 205/65R16 tyre size and non-standard 215/60R16 tyre size can be fitted to a 6.5J rim.

ETRTO approved rim widths

205/65R16 5.5-6.0-7.5

Yaris cross hybrid Excel 2022.

Have been looking for a space saver wheel. And I found the wheel shop and gave them a ring.

spoke to a very nice helpful lady gave her my reg number.

She told me 17in 149.95 plus wheel retaining bolt 12.95.

Okay so I ordered then I asked can I be little a bit cheeky is there any discount yes and gave me 5% very nice ordered Wednesday arrived Friday 28C845BB-C15D-4816-ADD5-65C359509680.thumb.jpeg.ecec0962e272b473705d31cfdd8bd04c.jpeg

If you zoom into that photo, you can see that the space saver tyre is size 135/80R17.

The outside diameter of 135/80R17 is almost 1" smaller than the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes.

It would have been better to have purchased a 135/80R18 space saver tyre which would have closely matched the outside diameter of the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes.

By using a spare tyre with an outside diameter that is too small, such as 135/80R17, you might have problems with the car's electronics, such as ABS, and traction control, etc. because the 135/80R17 wheel will be rotating almost 4% faster than the other tyres on the car.

Here's an example of a 135/80R18 space saver tyre, and unlike the cheap Chinese LingLong 135/80R17, it's a quality tyre.

What size tyre is it?

The only 17" space saver that I can see on camskill with a width less than 145 that would be a close match to the Yaris Cross tyre sizes is 135/90R17.

However, a 90 aspect ratio is very high profile and it would be better to have a 135/80R18.

Just took delivery of a 18" space saver wheel/tyre from the Wheel Shop, which matches the 18" wheel size of my Yaris Cross GR Sport. Tyre size: 125/70R18

The 125/70R18 has an outside diameter about 6% smaller than the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes.

However, it's easy enough to swap the undersize 125/70R18 to a larger 135/80R18 using the same space saver rim.

As you can see in the "Outside diameter of tyres" chart below, the 135/80R18 tyre has about the same outside diameter as the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes.

As you can see in the "ETRTO approved rim widths" chart below, the 135/80R18 tyre can be fitted to a rim width between 3.5J and 4.5J. The 125/70R18 tyre size is usually fitted to a 3.5J rim, in which case swapping to the larger 135/80R18 tyre size using the same 3.5J space saver rim won't be a problem.

It should be easy enough to sell the old 125/70R18 because that's probably the most common space saver tyre size, as its outside diameter closely matches the very popular 195/65R15, 205/55R16, 205/50R17, 225/45R17, 225/40R18, and 225/35R19 tyre sizes.

135/80R18 would be a much better choice as its outside diameter is almost identical to the standard Yaris Cross tyre sizes.

I am looking for advice please. The dealer who sold me the car quoted £500 to supply a Toyota SpaceSaver wheel kit and fit it. Looking on the Web they are available at half or less than the quoted price. Toyota Direct Parts quote £245 for a kit. Used their online form to find out what their kit consists of but they don't reply. If any one has had experience of obtaining a kit I would be grateful  for your comments. Thanks Bob81

By any standard that's ridiculous. Were they quoting you for the spare wheel ( which is a steel mini spare wheel ) or were they quoting you for a brand new alloy with original size tyre? At that price it sounds more like the latter.

Fitting? There's no 'fitting' involved - you lift the tyre and place it in the boot. It might take you all of 60secs if you're slow. 🤣

good day all, a friend has said that he has a space saver in his garage which i can have if it fits it was for a toyota Avensis.

the PCD is 5X114.3 which is same as the cross a bore of 60.1mm,  aspect raitio 70.

And the tyre size is 145/70/17.

Looking online the spec for the spare is a 16" with a 145 tyre on, and most of them on eBay are 17" with a 125 and 135 tyre. my cross is on order so cannot try to see if it fits, any help would be good

16".

Toyota Official parts online

If you look at Toyota UK website, they direct you to their official parts which is hosted by eBay.

The only wheel they have listed doesn't appear to come with a fitting kit but for 16" it's listed at £99. I think I'd be asking that dealer exactly what they're offering for £500 and why it's £500.

A full size brand new Yaris 17" alloy costs costs £273. That's from Toyota !!!!  Add a brand new full size tyre + jack + spanner and that's approching £500.  So how can it be £500 for a cheap steel rim ( which which should cost around £50 ) and a skinny tyre?

Either the dealer has the price wrong, they're ording the wrong parts, or they're related to Arthur Daley.

Please remember just because a car has 18" alloys, that the mini spare can be a much smaller steel rim. It's all about the diameter of tyre + alloy, not just the alloy itself.  Would be surprised if it's not the same mini spare they use for all Yaris Cross models.

Toyota Direct Parts

have a look at the above link. Original price is £257.66        IMO that's still way over priced, mini spares are usually around £150 - £180 mark, but it shows just how wildly out £500 is.  As I say, you can buy a brand new full size alloy and full size tyre for that.
