Yaris Cross ( Icon ) I am awaiting the arrival my brand new car, and would like it fitting with reversing sensors

I  have been told by my Toyota main dealer that they can't fit new reversing sensors to my brand new Yaris Cross Icon  for me.

Please can anyone give me a good reason why this is not possible?

Thanks for any advise you can offer me, Ian Blair

No idea! They won't be able to fit the factory sensors, which integrate into the car's main systems, but they should be able to fit a generic sensor kit like the ones you can get from e.g. Halfords...

Parking sensors are factory fit as they are integrated into the car, dealers are not interested in fitting aftermarket products

get the car and find an alarm fitter tbh, mirrors and camera are usually enough

Thanks for your comments .Do you think that by fitting aftermarket sensors  it would affect the Toyota 10 year warranty ?

Not significantly - The warranty for anything touched could be voided, if it's proved that caused the malfunction, but not for the whole car.

The reason I'm confused is that the dealers *do* offer to fit their own aftermarket parking sensors, just as they do dashcams, which would leave the warranty fully intact.

I know because when I was speccing mine up, I was looking at a Design-spec model, but wanted a HUD and parking sensors - The dealer were clear I couldn't have a HUD with Design-spec, but could have rear parking sensors.

On enquiring why only rear sensors, I eventually got them to clarify that they were just 'dumb' aftermarket, but still official Toyota, rear parking sensors, no different than you get from e.g. Halfords.

I didn't want that as I wanted the proper front and rear system-integrated ones, but it's something they have offered and should still be able to do. I seem to recall at least one member here had them fitted to their vehicle by the dealer.

Those options were Toyota approved accessories, oe for the parking is/was Cobra (now owned by Vodafone)

there is nothing listed for the Mk4 or Cross, only the Mk3 has the TPA (Toyota Park Assist) listed what is not cheap (kit plus sensors and paint)

I think it's up to dealer's discretion - For instance, Jemca apparently still offer gold and silver service discounted pricing for old cars (I think 12 or 15+ years old?), which stopped being a standard thing many years ago

The parking sensors are 'universal' so shouldn't be any reason why they couldn't fit them.

Like Flash I think that the reversing camera is more than adequate for going backwards, however, I can see the logic in having front parking sensors.

If the car doesn’t come with sensors from the factory then better not to fit any aftermarket or dealer fitted extras unless part of the safety tech. Perhaps next trim levels Design if offers sensors will be the better option as it will come loaded with few more useful extras and better led  lights. Just my thoughts. 👍

I like having both

I would love the 360 degree camera system too... (Frankly anything to improve the dire visibility in the Mk4 is welcome!!)

I can manage with the reversing camera but Anchorwoman prefers parking sensors.  I wouldn’t hesitate to fit aftermarket sensors.  I think the only reason its not offered is because you need two body coloured and two matt black.

On the standard Yaris design trim has the option of front and back sonar sensors with auto braking for £395, I'm not going for that, reverse camera is enough for me.

Sensors were fitted all round on my Auris, and started shouting at me when I was two feet or so from anything, even a privet bush at the corner of my drive. Arriving home and putting it up the drive was a stunningly noisy exercise. Just parking it in a Tesco car park was irritating, even if I was dead centre in the parking slot. I'm very happy with the camera and mirrors in my current '21 Yaris Design, although I did have an aftermarket electronical strip device fitted to my Volvo S40, but you had no hope of seeing the back end of that in the mirrors, and no camera. It worked quite well.

+1 for the camera as must have extra, but for the sensors I am not really bothered.👍

What I like a lot about the camera is that when you reverse out of driveway or narrow places with obstructing view behind the camera gives you a wider field of view and you can literally see if anyone comes from both directions, also great for reversing out of dead end roads in quiet residential areas. 👌

Yes TonyHSD,  Camera is good for letting you see down the road long before the mirrors will !.

The camera certainly gives you a wider field of view and is ideal for locating pedestrians who seem to stroll into your path when reversing in supermarket car parks.  Still rely on my mirrors though for everyday reversing.

Yeah, I'm not just looking at the reversing camera, but the wing mirrors and rear view mirror and all around, which is why I like having both as the audible sensors can give me an audible alert if I miss something because I'm looking elsewhere, but they are set very conservatively and I still haven't gotten used to them totally as they make me underestimate how much room I have (They'll go beeeeeeeeep! making me think I'm about to collide when I have e.g. a foot of space!)

Mirrors are better tho' - One thing with the reversing camera is I have almost no perception of distance or depth because it's 2D and has a very deep fish-eye effect, which throws off my perception, so I can't rely on it alone.

This is one reason I'd always pick real mirrors over these silly wing camera screens that some manufacturers have opted for. If you could have them in addition to the cameras, and they were all in one place, then it wouldn't be so bad, but where they have them, they put the picture in the same place as you'd have to look with normal wing mirrors, so you get the worst of both worlds - Still unable to look at all of them at the same time, and also losing that depth perception and the expanded field of view you can get with mirrors by moving your head around!

If I could look at the rear view camera screen and also see the wing mirrors at the same time, instead of having to look in 3 different places to see the 3 screens, then they would be much more useful, but at the moment they're a solution looking for a problem set up by people who can't think outside the box...
