Car tax rate for RAV4 Plugin hybrid

Hi, I'm looking at renewing my Vehicle tax this March and the renewal has come in at £510.

I guess it's correct but does this look right?

Looking online it seems to say £130 plus and extra £310 for the first 5 years, for vehicles with a purchase price of over £40,000.   Maybe I'm looking up an out of date web page?

If the vehicle list price when first registered was over £40k then it's hit with the extra luxury car tax fee on top of the annual road tax fee.

From the second year, your vehicle will be eligible for the additional payment for vehicles over £40K. Payable for five years.

So £510 sounds about right for the current tax year.

The website you looked at must be incorrect or out of date. The current flat rates of vehicle tax are £165 plus the additional payment of £355 for the over £40k list price. You get £10 reduction for an alternative fuel vehicle so £510 is correct.

I guess I missed that section at the bottom of their web page. Many thanks for pointing it out.

It's the thought that counts after all. So I'll really appreciate my £10 discount in May.On a more serious note it seems like some of us need to stump up more in tax to pay off the cost of Covid to the UK economy and we just can't keep hammering oil and gas or renewables generating companies can we........

HMG may increase vehicle tax rates from April 23 as well.

£510 a year,  Is that for life? If you keep the car let say for 10 years you will need to pay £5100 for road tax, I thought it’s a bit expensive.

Yes totally agree it's a lot of money but I think the Chancellor's view is that if you can afford a £40K plus car then you can afford the road tax. This tax was originally aimed at the higher spec'd cars and started life as over £50K but was not impacting enough in terms of revenue and dropped to £40K.  What's changed is that as we've evolved towards more eco friendly cars HEV, PHEV and BEV's the cost of the cars has shot up and more of us are having to pay the extra road tax levy.  What is a scam is the state of the road network but that, I guess, his another topic entirely on it's own.

Point of interest I did a return trip in one go of 116 miles yesterday, no EV traction Battery, so just HEV mode, the MyT app app says an average speed of 52mph, and 55mpg. For the size and weight of the car that's not a bad return on my fuel costs. (mind you I did 4 trips and only 2 got recorded by the app) My precious Subaru XV would never get anywhere near that and struggled to get over 35mpg under similar circumstances yet I'd pay significantly less road tax?

IIRC it's from year 2 until year 6 so your hit five times for higher tax at the moment.

It's one of the reasons I picked a C-HR over a UX.
