Hello to one and all. Having cancelled my RAV4 PHEV order placed July 2022 not due till March 2024 at the very earliest I am now looking at 6 to 18 month old RAV4  no part-ex. Would the nearly new car high mileage worry anyone.? i will take out a service plan with my local Toyota centre it will be Toyota approved looking at Dynamic or Excel 2 WD or AWD   I believe they are the only ones with heated seats . I've noticed the Dynamic has 19 in wheel why ??  Ref high mileage cars  I will only be doing up to 5/7 thousand miles a year Thank you again

Personally, I would not worry so much about a 1-3 year old car that had done a fair few miles. As long as it is reflected proportionately in the price. While you may never know for sure, those miles will most likely have been covered on long distance trips. A car with half the distance on it, may have been used for numerous short errands, the worst kind of trip.

What exactly is the mileage of the cars you are looking at?

For a used car new owner higher mileage purchase can save him a good amount of money and there won’t be anything to worry about the car.
Little bit of higher miles are not problem especially for those next owners who will drive not as much and the cars won’t continue to count the miles as they did before, the car will remain at average mileage  after another 3-5 years in case you decide to sell after that period, no money lost and only money saved from original list price.
On
a nearly new cars you will be still covered by the manufacturer warranty, dealer word aka consumer law in uk with rights to return for refund within 6 months from the purchase date if the car has a problem.
Important to note the services if been carried out within the mileage windows of 10k miles. 👍

I personally would not have cancelled before securing a used car. However given your low mileage and it is a Toyota you are buying, high mileage wouldn’t put me off. My guess is given the new supply problems, any used models will be £xpensive irrespective of miles. Why not look at Suzuki Across availability?

Because somewhere down the line someone decided top-end cars should have Noddy sized wheels.

Bad time to buy a used car right now. I think the Suzuki is worth a shot new. On the subject of car mileage as a  one time dealer in classic and sports cars the worst vehicles were ultra low mileage, though their unworn interiors attracted people the lack of use is not good for any machine.

My mantra when I have  bought a 2nd hand is avoid any that have been a hire car or a taxi. The hire car for two reasons, one is that with multiple drivers some of the car systems could have been abused because the hirer has no reason to care about the vehicle and the other is that quite often they may have been repaired and the history isn't immediately available when you are purchasing the car - even from a dealer!

I would avoid a taxi because whilst they may well have been serviced regularly just think about how many taxis sit on a rank with their engines running waiting for a fare!

I certainly wouldn't pay over the odds for a high mileage 6-18 month old car.

Why has it done so many miles, how many people have driven it, why did they get rid of it ?

Just a few questions I would have, but it wouldn't be for me anyway 😃

Take note, the current newer rav4 gets stolen via wheel arch can bus. It would take a brave person to get one with this knowledge.

There is a lot of Rav4 2022 Adventure models and a few Excels come om the market in the past few weeks. When I was down booking mine if for its service I asked for a price on mine and was told they had just bought 5 at auction recently, I suspect this was a Toyota auction selling off their managers cars, I maybe wrong but this was my feeling.

There have been times in my life I've done 20 or 30k a year because of work.

You don't see a lot of ravs as taxis so if it is high mileage it's likely done it on the motorway which is low stress for a car.  Especially these days where there are miles of enforced 50 and 60mph zones.

Can get stolen, as can lots of other cars. But in practice how many? Let’s get some perspective otherwise no one would buy anything of value

The Adventure is only a trim difference, suspension is the same. As for paying over the odds for high milers, the forces of supply and demand will dictate the vendors willingness to do a deal.

30-50k miles a year are the typical for company car drivers, managers fleet cars. There are some rav4 as taxis even in London but these will not go for sale for sure at least not before they get into 250-300k miles. Courtesy car, rental car, ex fleet if 2-3 years old and perhaps some repossessed will be available. If me I won’t be paying used car price closer to new or even more, no way, I will walk or ride an electric scooter or not going out but I will not be buying anything like that priced. I am sure there will be some good deals on rav4 and also a Camry because these are on the larger size for uk car standard and many people simply avoid these and look for Yaris and Yaris cross as these two probably the best Toyota sellers.

Just to clarify, Mojo's talking about a specific exploit currently in the wild which makes the RAV4 much easier to steal by a clued up thief than it would normally be.

It's still relatively low probability in the grand scheme of things, as you say, as the thief would need to be a specialist to get their hands on the magic box that does it, but the risk is still higher and potential buyers need to know so they can take appropriate precautions.

It's like catalyst theft - It's not that big a problem if you talk percentages, but specific cars are more vulnerable and targeted than others. People buying vulnerable/targeted vehicles need to know so they can get e.g. a catlock fitted asap!

Check out the Suzuki Across secondhand - they seem to have higher depreciation than the Rav4 Phev but it's the same car with different headlights/grills.

My Rav4 Excel has 19 inch wheels and came with Android Auto ready installed. It was registered in October 2020

If you are looking at 2021 cars then the price of the Excel prior to June was under the 40k threshold. Post June the price increase pushed it over and it became liable for the extra road tax. Also note that the Toyota warranty changed from 5 to 3 years at that time too.
