Adventure does not have the memory seats, only Excel does. This might be a problem, especially if two people drive the car regularly.
Suzuki Across does not have a built-in satnav and has a slower charger.

I believe from April 2022 onwards the Across has upgraded to the 6.6kw charger.

Take note, the current newer rav4 gets stolen via wheel arch can bus. It would take a brave person to get one with this knowledge.

You'd need to be especially brave to buy one of these instead then....

Two things jump out there:

Don't buy a Ford and park in the street.

Don't buy a small car and park in the street.

Why do no Japanese, French, Italian or Spanish cars feature?

Cars at £40000 purchase price  ??

I have attached 2 price lists one from October 2021 and one from December 2021

The change from  2021 models to 2022 models is the updated version of the RAV4

Depending on the colour ECT. the price could be higher

Just to clarify, Mojo's talking about a specific exploit currently in the wild which makes the RAV4 much easier to steal by a clued up thief than it would normally be.

It's still relatively low probability in the grand scheme of things, as you say, as the thief would need to be a specialist to get their hands on the magic box that does it, but the risk is still higher and potential buyers need to know so they can take appropriate precautions.

It's like catalyst theft - It's not that big a problem if you talk percentages, but specific cars are more vulnerable and targeted than others. People buying vulnerable/targeted vehicles need to know so they can get e.g. a catlock fitted asap!

Thank you for your kindness to clarify on my behalf 😆 In all honesty some of the things I say doesn't need clarifying, it speaks for itself. I don't get paid to write essays on forums 🙂

With the knowledge this car can be stolen with Canbus why in this day and age someone would knowingly buy this vehicle and then having to put a stoplock on it? Of course it's always upto an individual. Just have to see what the victims of this crime on this very forum write about their experience of this theft, then see how it affected them.

As long as I don't abuse people with ar****** and silly old fools comment 🙂 , don't feel the need to respond to every comment directed at me. Frankly I don't care haha.

Haven't you ordered a Yaris? From what I can see under the bonnet of ours, it's just the same access to the CAN bus wires.

Sorry, it's just that they seemed to not be aware as they were asking why buy any car as any car is stealable, as opposed to one being more stealable due to specific vulnerabilities, and I have a pathological need for details to be correct!

It is likely any car with exposed CANbus wiring is vulnerable, but each would likely require a different widget or code injection sequence to crack, which requires a fair amount of expertise and R&D which most thieves won't have access to.

I think the RAV4 has been a bit unlucky in that it's apparently desirable enough for someone to go to the trouble of figuring out the code sequence and also going a step further and designing and building a manufactureable idiot box to do it that can be sold to the thieving community at large.

Fortunately, the Yaris is not typically a car stolen to order and e.g. smuggled off to people in the middle east because... well.. it's a Yaris

Yarisusesiesueues have never been generally targeted as they're just not desirable, expensive or fast enough to be stolen to order, to be sold on or as a getaway/joyriding car. The integrated immobilizer and encrypted ECU they've had since the Mk1 already make them much harder to steal by the casual thief, so they're much more likely go after a vauxhall corsa/ford fiesta/fiat punto instead  .

Hmm, I didn't think being the most boring car manufacturer could be a security defence but there you go!

The simplest line of defence is to just avoid being the lowest-hanging fruit...

Absolutely why steal a Yaris when it take the same time and risk getting a car double it's value? And rightly so, Yaris isn't desirable to be shipped abroad for right hand drive country from the UK.

If Yaris are widely stolen in this way, then I would avoid no matter how much boxes it ticked.

It will of course depend on the precise spec and actual date of first registration but...

For my own car, a 2021 RAV4 Excel AWD-i that was manufactured in (I think) Jan 2021 and first registered in May 2021, the Price was £37755. So that makes it £155 and no luxury surcharge. At that point Toyota were still giving 5 year warranty so I have the balance of that.

Prices from April 2021 price list:

The same car registered after the price rise (MY2022 ?) was over 40k and only 3 years warranty.

Whatever you look at be sure to confirm exact dates and cutoffs with the dealer.

CarCareNut also details a number of improvements and fixes for the 2022 Model Year that were "undesirable" in the early cars. I have noted that my 2021 already has most of them.

But the RAV4 is not "widely stolen" when compared to other cars. Yes, we hear a lot about it here because we all look for information and share it. i.e. we hear about it a lot. At least 2 dealers that I have spoken to about the CANBUS theft had not heard of it and if it was that much of a major problem then you can be sure that they would have.

Exactly how many cars do you know have been stolen? I agree that there is a problem but it is easily and cheaply mitigated. As mentioned earlier, it is probably a good idea to maintain a sense of perspective. Would I still buy if I knew about this beforehand? Probably but I would have done more investigation into the extent of the problem and then made a decision fully informed.

There have been more stolen than would be considered the typical normal average for it, but in the grand scheme of things it isn't that high. However I think potential owners do need to be aware it is a thing so they can take steps, especially as the speed of the theft is quite shocking, similar to catalyst theft. Hiding the fact does nobody any good, except maybe the thieves!

At the moment it's a bigger problem in the USA and Japan from what I hear, but that's no reason to drop our guard!

I must admit, as it's a known vulnerability, I'd be inclined to wait until Toyota mitigated it before purchasing the car personally.

If you continued the list, the Nissan Quashqai comes in at 12th with 580 and 14th is our close relative the Toyota Yaris with 558. (Watch out Mojo1010, someone is after them 😄). Source below from a DVLA FoI request.

As for French cars, I'd better not go there 😄

To add balance to the discussion, a lot of reports of the RAV4 seem to be quite recent so maybe it will appear on the top lists for 2023 and all the figures really need to be viewed in context of the number of vehicles on the road.

Nowhere I tell anyone not to buy one, it's always upto the individual. Absolutely they need to be made aware of it if they don't already know. I did not see anyone mentioning it, so I did. What is the point in not highlighting this important info? I had 3 Toyota, spanning 12 years, another on order. Toyota are the No1 mainstream car brand for me, that doesn't mean I will defend them at all cost. Will point out negatives if there are any. A relative of mine had the mmt box failure on the MK2 Yaris, that was poor from Toyota, but no car brand is perfect, they cannot be with such mass production.

🙂

I don't always trust the dealers words, have personal experience of a number of Toyota dealers. Even this Toyota dealership where my Yaris was ordered, they wanted money for something which I didn't have to pay for, had to correct them! (Not going into detail what it is).

Anyway resting my case on this, you lot can continue to chat 🙂

To not buy a brand because it might be stolen?! Seriously? It’s about the last thing I consider. If that logic applied no one would buy a traditional LR Defender which is one of The most in demand cars for thieves.

One more thing to be aware of if looking at 2021 cars rather than the 2022 Model Year.

2021 gets TRK and no spare.
2022 gets space saver spare.

Fortunately, both OE and aftermarket options are available to remedy this.

Just to say thank you for all your advice I found a nice RAV4 Excel July 2022 3,589 miles  Managers demo  yes it's high VED but I am happy with the car I've put a refundable deposit down test drive this Sunday18th The salesman said After the test drive if you want the car take a note of the mileage we will park the car up in the compound as Toyota won't realise the car till 8th March. Strange that happened when I purchased   a nearly new Prius Plus back in 2012/13 that was a managers demo it must be Toyota policy I'll update my impressions of the car after the test drive .once again my thanks.
