Is Old Gold?

I saw a MK2 Escort in town today and I noticed how many people turned around to look at it.

It's funny how something we grew up with but never really gave a second glance to draws such curiosity. Thinking about this, what is it about the nostalgia of older cars. Is it the memory of the style of the car, the drive, maybe how easy they were to work on or how unreliable they could be or even the places we drove them.

Do you think the cars of today will have the same curiosity and appeal when they are seen in 40 years?

I remember the original Ford Escort (a less expensive version of the Squire):

Given the weird revival in 80's cars going on I think they will!!

Although I don't know how much of the appeal is nostalgia/reminiscence as opposed to, say, ULEZ exemption

Depends on your experience with them I suppose, funny you mention Mk2 Escort cos that was our 107's predecessor, it was a reliable and fairly rust free car , but if I'm honest it was very underpowered, ours was a basic 1.1 Popular model and had very few luxuries even no radio, until I fitted one.

Although we loved that car, it was no match for modern traffic, hence getting the 107, which is nippier, safer and loads more equipment., so doubt I would swap back if given the choice, but our Mk2 Escort was an every day car not just for high days and holidays. Was it a 2 door Escort RS by any chance?, the Ford crowd can be a fickle bunch, they only really love RSs and 2/3 door cars, if it's both then you are well in!

Well that's because the XR3i's and Sierra Cosworths were so stolen that if anyone had one the police would just arrest you on the assumption that you'd stolen it

White RS Mexico with blue stripe, it was in mint condition unfortunately I didn't have my phone with me so couldn't take a picture. It certainly brought a lot of attention. 😃
