need to remove the starter as the bendix doesn't seem to disengage properly sometimes.  Whats the best way to remove it - from underneath or is it accessible from above?  I guess it will help to remove things form the front like Battery etc.  I've refurbed old starters in the past stripping them down, cleaning & regreasing and changing brushes where necessary.  I assume it will be similar here too?

Many thanks

If you can get the parts to rebuild it, that will be your starting/ long crank issue then - more than likely it's the solenoid that's dying

1.6 auto iirc will be a 3ZZFE the starter is below the intake manifold, so more than likely has to come out the bottom

2 bolts - the bottom one is on the starter side and goes into the bell housing, the top bolt goes the other way - the head of the bolt is on the bell housing/gearbox side and bolts in to the starter

grabbed a random pic off the net and arrowed it

that pic is useful, thanks.  Ok, shouldn't be an issue to remove it from below, i'll put it on the ramps.  Anything to watch out for, like cables getting trapped or that cant be removed easily? Or removing other items for easier access?  Also, manual and auto starters both the same?

I'll replace it for the time being but i'll certainly try and rejuvenate the old one just in case..

Edit: ive just checked some suppliers and there seems to be a 9 tooth and 11 tooth starter, both for the E12 3ZZFE.  Is there any way to check which mine is?  There also seem to be two mounting bolt positions - one in which they are horizontal, the other where there are at the 10 and 4 positions (also directly opposite though).

Their part numbers are AES 2244 and AEY 2399, which are 11 and 9 tooth respectively

Thanks

It comes out easy enough from under the car when we had to remove it to replace the clutch.

Can you get spares for such parts these days, vs the cost of a refurb or new unit ?

Was not aware of the two different tooth sizes, but you might be able to check by looking up the part on the sites Flash22 mentions

"part numbers are from the Toyota EPC (Electronics Parts Catalogue) you can also look them up online on sites like megazip, toyodiy and Toyota.epc-data,  there's paid access via Toyota-tech.eu"

Just looked up a corolla zze120 2003 1.6 auto, it shows

28100-0D030 (12v 1.1 kw)

OEM should be Bosch, aftermarket shows 11 tooth or 11;9 meaning the starter is compatible with both types

Many thanks for getting back to me on that.
