Hi!

Unfortunately my lovely Auris (Auris Hatchback (E15) 1.33 Dual-VVTi (NRE150_) Petrol 101 hp) has a Knocking noise when turning. A fitter friend of mine has told me to get a new steering rack and a the ball joints. I've been looking in the internet and I can't find anything new, I've just found some for a left-hand drive cars. I was thinking that maybe I should get a second hand one although I don't know if it is a good idea.

Any recommendation? any place where I can find it, product code to look for? anything that can be helpful will be appreciated.

Thanks you all!

My recommendation is to get another opinion. Could be just a ball joint.

If there a slight knock when turning the wheel, and driving around at parking lot speeds, that's a known problem with the splines, it's due to dried out grease.

A steering rack is almost unheard of, far more likely is the steering intermediate shaft which is known to cause a knocking noise/sensation and has been superseded to cure the issue.

Steering rack on these vehicles is replaced only when inner tie rods  are failed because Toyota does not sell these separately but only as a whole new unit at high price. There are aftermarket tie rods on eBay and any mechanic can do them along with ball joints if necessary. The two other possibilities for knocking, clicking on these cars been mentioned above, if it’s from the spines dried grease this is not a problem nor mot failure so better leave it like that, many Toyota does it. If it’s from the intermediate shafts , needs to be checked and eventually tightened up or replaced.
That’s pretty much all. Try with another mechanic or show him what we thought of and he will run against checks for you.
Good luck 👍

If it's knocking while driving and turning (particularly on full lock), it could be driveshaft(s). Would certainly be worth getting a second opinion.

Thank you all very much!

I will go to an other mechanic, to be honest my friend just did a quick check.

I bouth this car a couple of months ago, I needed to replace my beloved Yaris, I saw this one for a good price, I didn't realize at that time but the car is a cat S, the seller was a little bit dodgy, my mistake.

I really love the car although the steering wheel is not returning to the center after a turn and it has that knocking noise at low speeds when passing through the center.

Well, a cat s and steering wheel not returning to the centre after turns it’s a whole new chapter. The car will need to be checked for steering performance and eventually a wheel alignment.
