Wondering if someone can help me, my 2006 Rav 4 wont let me at any diesel, stating empty on the gauge but when i go to fill up only lets me add shy of 2 litres then overflows, had a new fuel filler pipe put on about 4 months ago not sure if its an issue to do with that, read for codes but there are no codes being displayed so guessing its not a EVAP issue. any help is much apricated.

My first guess would be the filler pipe, maybe it's somehow not on right or the breather hole is blocked or something...?

Does it let you put more in if you let it drain or is it literally just 2L and the pump clicks off permenantly?

Hi Thomas, most likely related to the work done 4 months ago re the filler pipe, maybe not fitted correctly as Cyker says.

Either that or the sender unit is faulty, possibly again related to the work done, maybe a connection loose, etc

Has it been ok since the work was done ? and how long have you had the car ?

If you have been able to fully fill the tank within the 4 months of having the filler pipe replaced then it will most likely not be that unless during the replacement someone put a rag or clump of blue roll where the filler pipe joins on to the rubber pipe for the tank and the pipe now has a blockage. if you are confident there is no blockage or have already checked then I would suggest having the "sender unit" replaced in the tank. If you have the 2AD-FTV which I assume you do as you mentioned 2.2 diesel then it will more than likely just be a fuel level monitoring device you will have in the tank and not an actual pump. The other end of this is the less likely and that is that the gauge on the dash or the dash its self is faulty.

Hope this helps

I am confused by the posts on this topic. The original post states that after discharging about 2 litres of fuel into the tank the fill line overflows, suggesting the only thing being filled at this point is the filler line. I am (perhaps wrongly) assuming that the tank level indication was indicating an expected level in the tank when the poster decided to fill the tank. If this is correct then the issue can only be a blocked filler line.

Can the original poster either put a coat hanger or a piece of stiff wire carefully down the filler pipe and see if it engages with a blockage, or even better use an endoscope? I am not suggesting that if a blockage is encountered that it is pushed into the tank as that may cause a problem later. Also, was the new filler pipe fitted by toyota or another garage. I would go back to the person who fitted the new filler pipe and ask them to sort it.

My guess is that when the new pipe was fitted, a bung (blue roll wad) was used to prevent anything alien dropping into the fuel tank and if for example two wads were used and only one removed then this could easily be the culprit.

... Or if they pulled it out and it ripped and there's still a chunk in there; either way seems very plausible!
