Hello All, just brought a 2009 Yaris TR with 93k ok it with full service history for £1600.  Drives really well and I'm pretty pleased.

It does require alil love, such as only has one key, back arch has alil dent and a bumper scruff I'm hoping to polish out!

Does anyone have any advice for a 1.33 of this milage? Any maintenance tips? Is there a cheap way to get a spare key rather than going the main dealer?

Thanks Dean

I'd be tempted to do an oil change, but if it has full history and was serviced to schedule, shouldn't be much to worry about.

I assume it's manual?

It is a manual, 6 speed.  There's a receipt it has a intermediate service in november

Things to look out for:

The 2009 is the first year they used the 1.33 engine (Rather than the 1.3), and if it hasn't had new piston rings put in (Check the service history!), it may be prone to burning more oil than normal, so check the oil level regularly and maybe keep a litre bottle in the car just in case!

My one had a very notchy gearbox which eventually broke, so be careful of that - If it starts to get hard to put it into certain gears, esp. 1st and 2nd, get someone to re-calibrate the shifter cables (Toyota TSB: CP-0008T-0311); Do not force it into gear as the gearbox is not as robust as the 5-speeds (My one failed completely - I suspect a selector fork sheared off as it would only go into 3rd!)

Dealer is expensive but the least hassly way to get a 2nd key, and you definitely want a spare key!

You can try getting a use one off eBay and trying the manual programming procedure (Hopefully someone has it handy to post; Involves opening and closing the doors a lot for the remote, and pressing the brake and accelerator a lot for the immobilizer!), but I went through that with my Mk1 Yaris and ended up spending more money and agro than it would have cost just to get Toyota to do it!

Thanks for the reply it's much appreciated, I'll have a look in the history it's got alot so hopefully in there! The piston rings a recall?

What do you reckon the cost of a new key from Toyota is??

Hopefully I'll have no gearbox issues haha but I'll keep in mind if it starts getting hard to shift!

They weren't a recall, but they had a TSB and I think there was a replacement campaign for affected cars, where affected meant the car used more than a litre per 1000 miles or something like that (Sadly well past the cut-off date for that now!)

The key I forget off-hand; I think I paid £70 for the blank and programmed it myself using instructions someone posted on the forum, but that was for a 2005 Yaris. I think it was around something like £150 for key and programming (Likely more now as the prices of everything has gone up!!), but you'd have to ask the dealer for a quote.

Those old keys are not too bad compared to the newer cars that have keyless entry - The smart keys are eyewateringly expensive!!

re. maintenance, as with all Toyotas, regular quality oil changes is the main thing, but also keep an eye for rust, esp. at the back underside, as that gets more common the older the Yaris!

Hope you enjoy the car - The Mk2 has the most flexible interior of all the Yaris models; So many places to store stuff, and I really miss those trick rear seats!!

wow, finally, after all these years…

I used to have an 09 Yaris, I think mine was an sr?, it had this problem with the gears 1st and second were a real pain, I bought it at 18 months old but the dealer were very reluctant, or didn’t know, how to fix this issue, instead blaming the car mats, and our driving style!, I changed dealers who eased but never cured the problem, it eventually led me to get rid and move over to ford, but it was a great little car, my first car with a six speed gearbox and air conditioning!!, I loved how the rear seats slightly reclined and the cup holder with the air vent behind on the dash, perfect for cooling your drink, 😀
