My CTEK doesn’t have settings.  It says any battery can be charged but it’s “optimised” for AGM whatever that means.

The charge profiles for lead acid and AGM differ.  There are 8 stages with a CTEK MXS5.

As far as I see, stages 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 are the same.  The difference at stage 3 is the lead acid program charges to 14.4v whereas the AGM goes to 14.7v.  Stage 4 checks the declining current to 14.4v or 14.7v.  Stage 8 then pulses to 14.4v or 14.7v.

Which profile is better for the Calcium Battery

You need to duble check on the Battery when its time for a replacment mine is a MK4 hybrid.

For a charger just order one that covers Ca/Ca ie calcium or AGM some switch over to the correct mode automaticly.

Hears a photo of my Battery its calcium type Ca/Ca

Positive poston right of picture. Positive on left when its fitted

Please note the black holding clamp under the BM monitor.

If there are Lead Calcium Batteries in the MK4, then we have found where the problem is.

https://www.batteryskills.com/differences-between-lead-acid-and-lead-calcium-batteries/

.....lead-calcium Battery will require a charging voltage of not less than 14.8 volts.....

.....When the lead-calcium Battery is being used in the car it means the alternator has to continuously run to keep the Battery fully charged....

....A lead-calcium battery will require special charges unlike the ordinary chargers used in the ordinary lead-acid battery. The battery will require a charger that produces between 16.1 volts and 16.50 volts for it to be fully charged.....

IKN....................................

But that how forums go

Agm charge in a totally different way slowly and at low current <4a

No, the alternator does need to run on a hybrid as it had a DC to DC convertor, even so any modern alternator can be controlled

Lead Calcium - sealed

Lead-acid Calcium - vented

Dala I dont mind 14.7 volts but I hate to see a reading above 15 volts.

Unless your 16.5 volts is the reading from charger on open circuit condition ie no load attached.

Calcium Battery charging :

The reason for the CTEK charger AGM+RECOND mode:

So if destratification doesn’t benefit an AGM Battery, why does a CTEK charger provide an AGM + RECOND mode? The answer is that Calcium batteries can benefit from this programme. Calcium (Ca-Ca) batteries can suffer from stratification, so using RECOND to create a gentle gassing in the Battery can help restore power. As calcium batteries typically charge at higher voltages, they are better suited to the AGM programme mode and its higher voltage (+0.3v). Hence it being possible to use the AGM and RECOND programmes together.

Explain why CTEK say use the Lead Acid setting in the absence of advice from the manufacturer.

I contacted ctek a year ago. He answered this:

Dear Sir
Thank you for your question.
Regularly there is no reason to disconnect or remove the Battery from the vehicle, (or open the Battery caps), while charging, not even if you choose the recond- program.
Most vehicles have a voltage limit which is 16V, and CTEK chargers doesn’t exceed that.

CTEK chargers are spark proof and reverse polarity protected and electronic safe.
Also when you use RECOND mode.

If you have a very special system (in your vehicle or other construction) that does not allow 16V, or if the limit is even lower than that, please check special recommendations for it.
CTEK cannot overrule the car/vehicle/battery manufacturers recommendations.

Always good to read the particular manuals, what is advised.
Yours, faithfully,
CTEK SUPPORT TEAM

I have only used the "RECON" program twice so far. If I find out I don't have AGM but lead calcium, I will just use the AGM+RECON combination in the future.

This could solve the problem with dead car batteries in MK4.

I typed this before my last post above, for some reason it disappeared!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I asked CTEK which program to use for the Calcium Lead Acid Battery.  Here is there response:
Check with your Battery supplier what your Battery needs!
If it is to be charged at the higher voltage of 14.7V that both AGM and "snowflake" provide, then you should use it.
If you want to charge it with the "normal" 14.4V, then use only the "Car" mode.
If you can't get this info from the battery manufacturer, you can always use Car (normal) mode, it works for all batteries.
What, I wonder, is Snowflake?
I have sent a message to Toyota to ask them.  I suspect the answer may be 'ask me one on sport'.
