About Toyota Hiace 2003 central locking system

I have a Toyota Hiace 2003 and now the door lock mechanism is so worn that the driver's door wont open with key anymore. Central locking system still works just fine. I've read that changing the mechanical lock is a bit laborous, so I thought I would just install some kind of generic remote control system on top of the existing central locking system.

Now how does the central locking system exactly work? Is it possible to gain control of the locking system simply through a relay or transistor connected to wires of the interior central locking tumbler switch? Is there CAN-BUS? Does it have OBD or OBD2? Are the locks getting the unlock command through CAN-BUS or is it something simpler?
