12v Battery

I am having trouble with the 12v Battery draining in my Toyota Yaris bought new in 2021.  It cost me £118 to get the AA to jump start it in my garage.  The AA man said he thought the Battery to be faulty as he could not improve the amps beyond 12 amps, charging at 14.2 volts, after 2 hours of trying.  My Toyota agent has tested the Battery and says that the battery is not faulty.  I have bought a CTEC trickle charger (another £85) as I no longer trust this car to start.  WHY ON EARTH DON'T TOYOTA PUT A BETTER, BIGGER 12V BATTERY IN THE CAR?  I would willingly lose a little boot space to improve the reliability of the car.

Hi Glenis, welcome to the TOC. How long had the car been sitting since last driven??. Also see a recent post by one of our members re a better Battery he installed.

Troubling.

First of all, my advice would be to take out a breakdown cover to include home start, it cost £40.50 for my 2016 car which includes nationwide recovery from the company start rescue.

Battery problem as often associated with low usage, it could be a drain somewhere, but we don't know. My car is 6.5 years on original Battery just same as in your car, 35 amp.

I been with Start Rescue now for 12 years. We have used them, so can say they are quick to respond and reliable. Worst case, starter motor on the wife’s C1 failed while away from home. They sent out a truck, mounted the car and brought both the wife and car back to the garage within 100 yards of where we live. Early Covid days they came to our home to start our hybrid whose 12v Battery went flat. Then we learned to keep it charged up!

Glennis, as you bought new in 2021 you would have had included breakdown cover for 12 months.  I did.

After 12 months the Toyota breakdown cover was offered at a renewal price at half the cost of the AA cover even though cover is provided by the AA.

My preferred supplier had been Green Flag yet Toyota was less expensive.

Regarding whether you Battery is u/s or not, have been allowed to go flat once will have damaged it.  Your CTEK charger could well prolong its life.

As for your garage saying it is OK, they are probably right too.  However over at least one year on it is questionable if they would give you a warranty replacement.

That said, I had a replacement for my Corolla at the 12 month service.  I had taken a daily voltage reading while I did not use the car. I gave them my readings and they changed the Battery with no questions.

As a consequence they retained a customer and I bought a new car from them.
