Toyota Aygo X-Trend 2020 Front Rusty Wheel Bolts

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi, I ordered a new Toyota  X-Trend in 2020, the delivery of whichw as delayed, due to the first Co-Vid lockdown (March to June 2020).

However, the front wheel bolts have gone very rusty, whereas the rear wheel bolts seem fine.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Presumably they are made of steel and not alloy as most manufacturers would use?

A disappointed owner.

Mine is the same age and hasn't suffered any rust in the slightest, report it to the dealer should be dealt with under warranty.

On approaching the local dealership about making a warranty claim I was told that I could not do so. This issue is not covered under warranty, apparently if you take your care to a commercial carwash they use acid in a wheel cleaning solution to clean the wheels quicker and that this eats into the protective treatment upon the steel wheel bolts rendering them more prone to corrosion, which in this case would be classified as fair wear and tear.

I wonder what protection lies under that, which on the surface, appears to be

 an alloy-coloured lacquer finish?

BTW have you noticed that on any car the front wheels always seem to pick up more salt and dirt from the roads, possibly leading to more corrosion on an already compromised surface?

Just a quick thought is the dealer telling me porkies to put me off making a claim or is this true?

Absolutely nonsense imo.
Firstly the front wheels doesn’t pick more dirt and salt but the rear ones. Front wheels pick all the nasty stuff and send it straight towards the rear wheels, where rear wheels pick and send towards rear of the car. Simply physics. Pics to proof.
Secondly how did they know or can prove that the car was washed with acidic wheel cleaner?
That is a lot of bs and if me I will be kicking it big time., or perhaps send them my gf to deal with, might get a free bits afterwards.😂image.thumb.jpeg.465afa8cfc0ed60d65e04b121659871b.jpeg

I've never had rusty wheel bolts on any of my Toyota's even 15+ years old! Only the face of the locking nuts.

Seems like customer service is not their priority! Potentially loosing a long term customer over some wheel nuts.

You could take them off and soak in wd40 overnight and see if they we clean up better!

I do remember some owners of early Auris complaining on these forums about rusty wheel bolts. Some were replaced under warranty and some weren't. Some owners resorted to plastic bolt caps to disguise the bolts.

I had my mot and service done on my 2020 Aygo just last month, service department were clearly trying to get as much money as possible out of me because they said they wanted to replace my front and back wipers. On the video they shared to me looking underneath the car, she looked clean as a whistle. I told them my front wiper was fine, but I relented in the end just to get them off the phone.

The car wash excuse is nonsense, I'd get onto Toyota head office personally.

Yeah, my dealer also like to say my wipers need replacing because they're 'smearing' - Given how much I paid for the PIAAs there's no way I'd let them change them for normal cheap wipers and loose the hydrophobic coating!

With the wheel nuts, same - The normal ones have always been shiny, only the locking ones were the black sheep, or maybe reddy-brown sheep, of the lot

Corrosion of wheel bolts is not covered by warranty at all, taken from warranty policy manual:

Cosmetic Corrosion on Functional Parts e.g. exhausts and brake callipers - this is not
covered as it is a natural reaction and does not imply the part is defective.

Your dealer can however "self authorise" a one off Goodwill claim for items such as corroded wheel bolts / locking wheel bolts so long as the car is still within manufacturer's warranty period 5yr/100k up to June 2021 3yr/60k from June 2021 and still owned by 1st owner, Toyota allow a cost up to £250 on parts so long as the dealer agrees to waive any labour charge this done via " Compass > Warranty > I would like to self authorise Goodwill"
