Run a bottle of Redex through about a quarter of a tank of fuel, and take it for a nice long drive just before the retest, say about 8-10 miles and give it a good thrashing in low gear for as long as you can, it should then pass the test with flying colours.

You could remove the air cleaner element just for the test. That should make it run leaner as it will have no restriction to the intake air. They dont actually check emmisions as such they check for smoke. When I took my sister in laws citroen zx deisel it failed and the tester said "is it normally used in town for short trips??" the answer to that was yes so he told me to run it along a nearby dual carriageway on the rev limiter then bring it straight back in. Did that and it passed OK.
