Serous Gen 5 Problem

HI all. this may be a bit vague but im gonna try.

got a new set of pads put on the front by a garage,

got it back their was a scuffing noise so i took it back, they said they need to bed in and the scuff plate was rubbing, fair enough,

300 km later. suddenly starts making a noise like the brakes are jammed on, you know something every rotation scuffing.

well it goes away whe i turn right and take up acceration, but its making a very loud clicking noise sort of cv like noise but far more scarier than this, jacked it up and everything looks fine, so i dont know what to do next .

cars not on the road as i dont want a drive shaft popping out.

anyone ever experianced anything similar. when im slow and turning into my parking space the noise is fierce i thought at first the disc wasnt sitting right..

jack it up again, Put it on axle stands. Whip the wheels off and have a good thorough look at everything. Check the dust shields arent interfering with the disc. Rotate the hub and see if you`ve got any binding of the brakes. Also while your at it check the brake hoses and ABS leads to make sure they`re not chaffing. Check for any signs of chaffing anywhere.

Put the wheels back on and give them a spin. Go through all the previous checks. Turn the steering lock to lock and try again. And while you`ve got the car securely on axle stands give the wheels a good shaking. Side to side, Up and down etc. Pay special attention for play in bottom ball joints and CV joints. And also the hub bearings. (Hub bearings usually hard to detect wear unless well advanced)

If it still makes the noises i`d be inclined to get it into a garage ASAP.

while its up on stands put it into first and let out the clutch and take it up to 3000 revs ,listen for the noises whilst the wheels are spinning if the stands are far enough away from the wheels you could even turn the wheels lock to lock.make sure handbrake is on and chocks are at hand .those dust shields on my 95 are rotten , i just ripped all mine off.but the noise you describe is a bit more aggressive than a dust shield rubbing.if it were a wheel bearing you would of heard a whining for months leading up to its collapse .also check the cv boots arnt split chucking out grease, cos they dont last long running dry.

2nd opinion suggests cv joints,

mr.t dont sell cv separate , you have to buy the full shaft , for mine it was £485.without fitting.

I GOT A RECON CV JOINT FOR £ 67 AT LOCAL SHOP.

i was thinking supra too , but 8 to 10 grand for a car thats 11 yr old bugs me , when i can get a 3 yr old celica for the same.the mind still ponders.

i had same prob it was broken cv,

i had them all recon for £275 + one new cv at £130

\I gave it to mr toyota on saturday and have left it with him to examine,,

ill post his findings when i hear back from him..

( fingers crossed, as im wanting the sura spoiler this month )

sounds like neglect to me.things like that dont happen overnight.best to mend a problem as it happens and not let them build up , 1 worn part leads to 3 or 4 more in the same area.so equals 4 times the expence. happy motoring. :thumbsup:

and yeah i have neglected it a bit i admit,

at least mot shouldnt be a problem..

still searching for a splitter! help?

its a great looking motor and these things happen to new cars anyways ,it will be ok once sorted for good long while , keep it right and enjoy it.yes they can be an expence at times but just remember the good times riding in it and it makes it all worthwhile.

1 of my wheel bearings is singing to me right now , waiting till its real loud then its my turn to give my wages away. :crybaby:

i've spent close to a grand on mine in 1 year , luckily i do all my own repairs so no labour charges.i also said its my first toyota and it will be the last , but these cars just have the ability to say awww fix me you know i'm worth it. :lol:

id agree with you their mate, this is the third time ive nearly given up on mine and went for a change..

but it always seems to get fixed

i just dont have the tools the space or the time to do my own repairs...

wished you lived local mate

Maybe its too old now- its a while since i been on here :wacko:

What was the problem in the end?

I ended up having to replace:

Driveshaft - cv boot - bearing - ABS sensor - track rod end :(

he answered on another link , it was wheel bearing , ball joint , from what i remember.

Ah, cheers mate ;) Bet that cost a few quid if it went to MR T :(

ADVICE ON REMOVING STEERING KNUCKLE ON GEN 5 GT's with ABS:

In order to remove the steering knuckle, the manuals say to remove the ABS sensor from the hub itself- DON'T

I tried it and ended up snapping it cos it was seriosly welded in there- and its expensive to replace. £105+VAT to be exact.

So my advice here (bear in mind i am no mechanic) is to remove the bracketry in the arch for the sensor harness or loom, and disconnect the leccy plug which sits behind the plastic arch shield at the top of the arch.

This way the steering knucke / hub assy can be removed from the strut and the car, allbeit with the abs sensor wiring attached to it.

Hope this saves someone else a big bill in the future ;)

yeah they rust themselves to the hole , i had to drill my old ones out , cost was £ 89 each for the front 2 .

tis handy to know the parts staff at toyota :thumbsup:
