Engine Failure/No Compression

Avensis Tourer 1.8VVT-i 5 d Auto  Reg.: September 2010  72.5K.  Regularly serviced - mostly by Toyota dealerships. No heat coming into cabin after I started the engine to defrost windscreen a few weeks ago. I began to drive and after 3 miles warnings and warning lights began to appear - initially VSC and Parking Brake. Eventually several more warning lights illuminated, loss of power, no acceleration and then no compression when on M-Way hard shoulder.  A Toyota dealership told me what it wasn't - a broken pin on Camshaft but didn't/wouldn't dig deeper.  So much for a diagnosis.  Do I scrap as a non-runner? Do I investigate further? Any ideas of cause? All replies welcome.

No heat into cabin usually means lack of coolant. Was the engine temp correct the day before? Was there any visible leaks? Was the coolant reservoir empty, etc?

It would be good to know the exact error codes. How about going to some other workshop to read the dtc´s?

Was the engine turning over with the starter after it stopped?? Did it overheat and seize up due to lack of coolant being pumped??

If the car in good general condition can repair or replace engine. It seems like overheating issues , failed water pump or coolant leak and the rest as a result. No heating at all and coolant temperature rise is the first sign of overheating.

I kept an eye on engine temperature and it stayed as normal.  Coolant reported as OK by AA's Benjamin. Likewise oil. AA report attached, now.

i doubt its timing as it would throw all sorts of other codes and make one hell of a noise if a cam or chain let go, i would disconnect the alternator by taking the power cable off the back and taping it up, or take off the Fan/aux belt and crank it over

P0117 and P1603 point to a voltage problem, if the ecu isnt getting the correct voltage that will cause the P1604

What do you mean as in no compression ?

Does the engine rotate too easily when starter is on?

Hi JJ

Nothing doing. I turn the ingnition key - there is a noise and no life in the engine.

There is no firing once I turn the ignition key .. just a whine.

I´m trying to imagine what might sound like whining... I still want to know if the engine is rotating or just the starter? You´re gonna need somebody to watch the engine when ignition key turned...

That doesn't mean no compression, that just mean no spark

I take it you're not mechanically inclined

can you take a video or record the sound

  • 3 months later...

Thanks to Sam's Garage, Bearwood, B66 for recommending HALESOWEN ENGINEERING who in turn recommended NIPPON AUTO SPARES, Derby. A replacement engine was fitted by NAS two months ago. The car has covered 1800 miles since. Passed MOT today, no issues or advisories. Really pleased with the work done. Recommend NAS. Overall cost £2.2k which included collection from Brum, supply & fitting of replacement engine, oil, filter etc & supply & fitting of new radiator. Thanks for your support guys. John.

Thanks for coming back to tell us how you got on!

Glad you got it all sorted; A hefty chunk of money, but probably cheaper than a replacement car, and hopefully will have a long life now!

Did they find out what broke? (I'm assuming it was pretty serious to need a replacement engine!)

Thank you, Cyker.  Coolant drained, leaking radiator, possibly as a result of a shunt several months before.  It was a £'wedge' but a good decision. I'm in the market for a WAV but not just yet. Take care.
