Hi . I need some help with estima 2008. 2.4 hybrid. 80k. Car was almost not in use for the last 2 years. Every few hundred miles I have check engine light and codes:
P0A80
Raw code: 0A80
ECU: 7EA
Status: Confirmed
OBDII: Hybrid Battery pack Deterioration
C1259
Raw code: 5259
ECU: ABS control unit #2
Status: Confirmed
C1310
Raw code: 5310
ECU: ABS control unit #2
Status: Confirmed
P0A80
Raw code: 0A80
ECU: Hybrid engine system
Status: Confirmed
OBDII: Hybrid Battery pack Deterioration
P0A80
Raw code: 0A80
ECU: Motor generator
Status: Confirmed
OBDII: Hybrid Battery pack Deterioration
There is also vsc 4d warning in Japanese displayed on the screen.
I used dr Prius to run some diagnostics ( many times) and it says : battery test pass ( most of the time), occasionally would say poor balance on one random module.
life expectancy test is a disaster. It say 13 %, (on one occasion 30%. )
So I took it to a specialist (local guru), ad he said that the problem is more likely ABS ( ABS accumulator, control or something like that, he wasn’t sure the full name). He said it is very common problem with estimas and he just done one recently. Estimated cost to replace it about 1000 pounds, mostly for labour as it is more than 5 h job.
He said that obd2 applications like dr prius are inaccurate. He said that batteries on estimas do not really go wrong. He said that if my battery was at 13 % capacity I wouldn't be able to use my car.
The car seems to run on EV when its fully charged ( to approx 55-60 %, i cant charge it any higher). Everything seems to be ok, but I do believe the capacity is reduced a lot.
I thought that the battery is the problem so I just bought new one. (but can cancel the order) . What are your opinions about the codes? do esimas suffer from ABS problems? are batteries so reliable? I need a second opinion please

First off, replace the 12v Battery

those codes are not ABS they are hybrid ecu codes

Can you post a screenshot of all the cell voltages

If a code sets a MIL it will also set VSC/ABS lights it's just a strategy Toyota use

Hi. Thank you for your replay and help . I had new original Battery fitted 3 months ago.  There is a very popular video on you tube about somebody  from Baltic state (i presume) having problem with POA80 code on estima. A lot of people refer to this video and  follow his advice (replace  12v battery). He later posted another video saying that it actually didn't fix the problem.  I did more research about this and I dont think 12v Battery can easily  trigger poa80 code.

Regarding voltage. Please find attached report from dr prius. You can see there that when accelerating and braking the difference between max and low  voltage on each block  can be huge. Screenshots were done when car was idling.

I take it you have cleaned the fans and ducting

i think dr prius is not showing all the data for the Estima as the pack is made up of 12 blocks at 14.4v on the bottom row and 9 blocks x 9.6v on top so 21 blocks

only true way to tell is with techstream - By looking at the data in the CSV, the pack is dying

Hi.Thanks for your reply and help. Clogged fan is often common in toyotas prius. Cooling fans ( and there are 2 in estima) are located in different places and are not prone to clogging. The only way to check it is to get inside the Battery. And i think that you are right saying that the pack is dying. I will replace it and update on progress.

Hi. I have estima 2008. I love it and its truly a proper family car.

It had  poa80 problem ( every few hundreds miles I  would see Christmas lights on my dashboard ). As the car was not really in use for the last 2 years I decided to change hybrid Battery

Prior to  replacing EV I  ran series of tests using dr prius. My old Battery soc  was always between 40% and 58% . Very occasionally dr prius would show sudden SOC drop from 40% to 25% and at that stage poa 80 code would be displayed. After that car would charge to 68 % - discharge, and then  work again within 40 and 58% region.

Other than this:

-battery would typically run on EV without problem ( although dr pius  estimated capacity of Battery to be 13 percent!)

-the voltage when not under load  would show slight v-shape pattern ( please see second pic)

-some readings were ridiculous when stressing  battery  ( please see photo with lots of red colour) but it would still not trigger the POA80 CODE.

I decided to pay somebody to replace all cells with new one ( apparently, made in South Korea).

I run the same tests and not much changed. Soc is at 40 to 59 %. I see completely no difference in battery behaviour, fuel consumption etc.

The only difference is that:

- poa80 code is gone ( for now, I still have to wait to confirm it)...and it will be a big one!

 - v -shape pattern is rather gone ( please see last picture)

- dr prius still shows me very similar data to the old battery ( rather huge difference in voltage when accelerating and breaking,).

-Dr prius capacity test now shows 16 %.. rather than  13%

I was worried  that the battery is not behaving like new.

My questions are:

How accurate is dr prius/hybrid assistant on estimas? It shows 15 blocks, but estima has 21! I just run Hybrid assistant and It show some delta data in yellow (in the report).

Is 40 to max 60 % SOC on estimas a standard? (I  did my research and found some estimas owners  using 40 to 75 % soc. Is there a way to adjust it? is 40-60 a perfect ratio?

I was expecting new battery to last on EV mode slightly longer than my old 15 years old battery. Is it normal that the only difference I will see is  "hopefully" no poa80 code?

Thank you in advance.

as i said above the only way with the estima is with Techstream, the pack in the JDM cars is very different compared to other Toyota hybrids that have equal voltage strings (typically 14.4V)

Dr prius doesn't have enough information to fully calculate the values as it's not reading all the strings (21)
