Correct oil 1.8 2ZR-FE

Hi, apologies for this because I know it's been asked a million times..

What is the correct grade of oil for a yaris 1.8 sr 2ZR-FE please?

I asked toyota online and the response was 5w30 FE. The confusion comes with whether it's full or part synthetic etc.

Some online sellers (toyota dealerships) have said semi synthetic, where I thought it would be fully synthetic!

Various other outlets all give different options but are all 5w30.

I believe fully synthetic is better, but I'm happy using semi synthetic and do 2 oil changes a year instead.

Any confirmation/help would be appreciated. I've checked the owners manual and it doesn't cover the 2ZR-FE variant.

Thanks

Hi Dan,

toyota own 5w30 oil is indeed semi synthetic oil not from the very best ones imo . Most common Supplier at the time of my research was chevron texaco mainly, some maybe made by mobile 1. I am not sure currently who it will be as these things are constantly changing.
You can use this oil without any problems although a fully synthetic oil might be a better choice for your engine, double check with your manual.
I think it’s wrong to believe that using semi synthetic oil and do more frequent oil changes can compensate because oil does lube and protects your engine when you drive the car which means the semi synthetic oil will not have the same properties as fully synthetic especially during the most important low or high temperatures and it will not work as good as the higher grade oil. You can check these guys  https://www.opieoils.co.uk and see what they have to offer. I personally use 0w20 Petronas and seems like a good quality full synthetic oil. 👍

I believe fully synthetic is best, just confusing why the manufacturer would still recommend semi synthetic!

I've always used Castrol mag 5w30 fully synthetic when asda use to sell it for £20.

I've just bought a service kit on eBay from Snows Toyota Exeter, including Air, oil, cabin filters, sump plug washer and "free" 5 litres of oil for £50 delivered. They are sending all the correct genuine parts.

This is why I was questioning the oil because they are sending part synthetic!

I was under the impression that one of the main differences with full/semi was the life span of the oil. Hence, back in the day oil changes were recommended more frequent.

I always find companies selling oil online, always give different specs/options when you put in your registration number!

Thanks

That’s a good deal. It’s the right grade oil for your car so you shouldn’t be worried about. If we dig deeper we may see that even the “fully synthetic” oils aren’t as fully synthetic as the label suggests, unless been pao group 4 or higher.  You can Google this “group 4 pao synthetic oil” and there is interesting information to read. My 0w20 fully synthetic oil might be as much synthetic as yours but I am not bothered to research as I had been using it now for many years. 👍

Toyota don't specify either semi or fully synthetic, just the grade and API spec.

So it's ok to use either Frostyballs?

As they don't specify either, then yes.

I am confused as to how they can sell the 'service packs' (inc free oil), at the prices they quote?

Can anyone make sense of this?

It’s not free as such they will be making money at £50 , I sell service kits to trade and retail for similar price only difference my oil isn’t free

For example a 2010 Auris 1.6 2010 at retail in north of England in £53 for all filters and a mid range branded oil and new sump plug , trade customer would be roughly £15 cheaper and I’m still making money.

Being part of the snows toyota group, they probably have a good discount across their dealerships. I was told that the price of service parts, is roughly half the price they charge the customers! It's a genuine deal, as I've bought 3 kits of them. If you buy 2 or more kits on eBay, it gets reduced further to I think £47.50 each. Bare in mind the "free" oil is semi synthetic 5w30.

Yes. Toyota set up a specific trade parts programme a few years ago, in order to be competitive, they needed to come up with deals that compete with the likes of Euro, GSF etc, deals where we can compete on price with those big boys. Every time a trade customer buys a service kit, the dealer supplies the oil at LESS than cost price, and Toyota refund the difference as a rebate. These "deals" are to generate extra trade sales and claw back some of the business lost over the years to the local garage trade. Some dealers are selling these "Trade" kits to retail customers, that is not strictly part of the programme, it is supposed to be a "Trade only" offer

Take no notice of this long life oil, at your peril, BMW owners know now, I change the oil regardless, I let the garage change the oil each year(we don't do that many miles) they stamp the book and I'll change the oil say after 6mths, it might seem excessive but your engine will love you for it.

I use only genuine toyota parts, service kit from snows toyota delivered for £50, including oil, air, cabin filters, drain plug gasket and 5 litres of 5w30.

Kyb shocks and springs who originally supply toyota.

Aisin supply toyota with parts like water pumps, clutch parts, drop links etc.

I buy most of the parts from Amayama.com, basically half the price from Toyota UK. These are imported from Japan or United Emirates. There is roughly 3-4 delivery time.

Larger items try yam6carparts.co.uk because postage from Japan is expensive.

Also try autodoc, type in your vehicle details and then the OEM name, Denso, Aisin, etc and you can get the parts cheaper than buying direct from Toyota.

Amayama.com,

I managed to get a hard-to-find part for my Eunos 1993 import from here.  It was a windscreen surround rubber.

Mazda are now manufacturing Mk 1 MX5 and Eunos parts again for the majority of the consumable bits.
