RAV 4.5 PHEV windscreen crack

Got in the car this afternoon after a walk on the beach and saw this. As we set off yesterday afternoon for our weekend away there was a loud crack noise but couldn’t see it detect anything. No evidence of stone chip or similar. Anyone else had anything similar happen? C58C962C-D24D-488C-9748-50BAD6C836FC.thumb.jpeg.620fc80384f92c56cab0d106aed19545.jpeg

It looks like a stress crack rather than a stone or other impact.

Exactly, it is definitely not impact related. I am interested to know if it is a manufacturing/build issue. If so I will be expecting Toyota to pay!

Not unknown when there is insufficient clearance between glass and frame. Most manufacturers accept claim within 1,000 miles or 1 month of delivery - at least they did way back when.

I suspect your insurer will be your best friend in this instance.

Sorry.

Once repaired, test your heated windscreen and rain sensors before the repair guy leaves.

It is being replaced by Auto Windscreens through the insurance. However I will ask for a report from them regarding likely cause. IMO it is probably down to the weather (temperature stresses) but manufacturing/installation related cause cannot be ruled out. although 18 months after build lessens that possibility when Googling there is some evidence of an issue with the windscreens.

I have no wish to be alarmist but some years ago I had a windscreen replacement by them in a Mercedes I owned. I don't know what their screens are made of but it must have been akin to cream cheese as it gained some deep scratches just by my removing a bird dropping.

Personally, I would never use them again and on a new / nearly new car I would absolutely insist on OE glass and fitting, even if it meant paying the difference myself.

Edit: Afterthought... how does a third-party aftermarket windscreen affect the warranty?

Had mine replaced by Autoglass; never again. I've since found out if I'd paid an extra £200 excess I could have had Toyota do it, that will be my route if I ever need another replacement.

Autoglass did mine in a Subaru XV and I had to insist that they covered the cameras with the parts that Subaru provided when I bought the car in the event of a windscreen replacement.  The guy got very full of himself at one point but I would not let him work on the car until they were fitted. Like many service industries it all depends on who you get to do the job.

Usually Autoglass warrant the windscreen for life; The warranty for the rest of the car remains intact. Not sure if Toyota do it whether it's rolled into the manufacturer warranty or if the dealer only warrants it for a certain time.

(To clarify - Any change you make to the car ONLY affects the warranty on that part and does not void the manufacturer warranty for the whole car. Only if they can prove that part also causes a problem elsewhere, would the 'elsewhere' also not be covered. But if you e.g. change your shocks, the shocks will no longer be covered under warranty but if e.g. the engine later broke, that would still be covered unless they can prove the replacement shocks somehow caused the engine to fail)

They should remount cameras and other things stuck to the glass as part of the repair; Mine did (Although I wish I'd told them not to as they've put my Dashcam a bit too close to the ADAS pod!)

They should also recalibrate the ADAS etc. if needed.

Autoglass seem a bit more on the ball about that; My dealer forgot twice (I had to get them to requote the first time to include ADAS recalibration, then they forgot they had quoted for it and tried to charge me again after the windscreen was fitted after the installer reminded them they needed to do it!)

Wasn't as smooth a process as I'd have liked, even ignoring the initial 2 month delay by Autoglass before I told them to stop messing me about and went back to my (now ex-!) insurer to get authorization for Toyota do it instead, but the new windscreen has been fine since and the ADAS hasn't tried to kill me any more than it did previously

Out of curiosity, what was it about Autoglass that put you off them if you don't mind me asking?

I never got to try them as they kept stringing me along saying they had the glass on back order (Forever it seems!)

Autoglass had a windscreen in stock, but I had to wait a couple of weeks for a slot; the nearest centre to me is a 90 mile round trip. I mentioned the heated wiper element and was told it was there, which it was. However, after I got home I realised the heater for the Wiper Blades didn't work, not only that, but they had scuffed the paintwork on the front wing. I contacted Autoglass and was assured their claim department would be in touch; I rang again a week later since they hadn't rang back. The soonest appointment they could offer was in Darlington (2 week wait and 140 mile round trip) Since I didn't want to take it back to Gateshead, the original fitters, I accepted. Darlington polished out the scuff marks, and got the wiper blade heater functioning; they were a bit reticent about it, but said something needed soldering. I didn't think they replaced the glass, but on the way home I had to pull over and clean the inside of the windscreen which was filthy. Since then I've had occasional problems with the lane tracking especially with a low bright sun, I wonder whether the part of the screen the system uses is as dirty as the rest of the screen was, and that this causes problems in certain weather conditions. The calibration seems fine, but occasionally it just doesn't seem to see the lane markings. On both my visits there was virtually no communication, a standard spiel on not washing the car etc...but nothing else. I had to ask why the heater hadn't worked, nothing offered just keys, spiel and walk off.

I can't be bothered to go back to Autoglass and face more hassle, so I just live with it; I've only got the car for another 13 months

In future I'll pay the additional excess and get a dealer to do it.

The dealer will probably sub the work out but the dealer will be responsible for the work and it will be covered by the dealership warranty.

When I needed a windscreen I tried several dealers, they all told me they didn't do it themselves but put it out to either a small local installer or Autoglass. The small installers some used couldn't get the glass in stock any decent time. I would also question how well they were kitted out to calibrate the sensors too compared to the 'big boys'.
Autoglass were OK'ish, car has to go to a depot with the right gear and they are limited in number. The fitting was neat enough and the windscreen heater worked, no issues with sensors or ADAS.
The only issues was the Black trim near the base on the drivers side, I suspect they broke a tab or such as it pops up now and then and I push it back down again, might just stick a dab of Evostick on it. No issue with the quality, its had some loud debris hits and its survived better than the Toyota original but of course depends on the hits.

Auto windscreen phoned me yesterday to book the time for fitting today - and then told me they don’t actually have the glass, it is a dealer supply item and still waiting delivery……. To add to my frustration, they called me to finalise the appointment and then tell me they can’t discuss the fitting appointment until I tell them my password!

It is a ludicrous system hiding behind a data protection security b8ll8cks interpretation. They already have my details, car info and phone number otherwise they a) couldn’t call me and b) couldn’t order the windscreen. Utterly ridiculous situation.

Data protection 🤬

My kind neighbour rang my car insurance company last week as it is due for renewal and I have been stuck in hospital until today (hopefully home later).

This was simply to give them that information and please hold on until I can ring with my policy no and renew as soon as home.

But of course it involved him having to listen to the full spiel about how they cannot give information out due to the ubiquitous data protection.

Before of course allowing him to get a word in and explain that he didn't want information, just to give information.

Fingers crossed 🤞 that they haven't cancelled it, and double the premium.

Cynical I know, but wouldn't be surprised.

I had DPR nonsense a few years ago before it became a capital offence.  We had two flights booked through Airmiles.  They rang with an important change.  Password?

Eventually I managed to establish a line of communication and give them a password.  But as they called me, I insisted that they give me a password too.  Impass. 😁

Mine was 'No idea'

It’s no joke having to wait for the pharmacy it’s driven me mad when my mum was alive trying to desperately get her home and waiting hours for medication that she had when she went in and the hospital destroyed. Sorry way off topic.

Thanks Roy and Ernie,Sorry still off topic, luckily I have some of the meds at home, and they sending me off with a party pack too.

Otherwise would be 6 pm ??onwards for one item if missing.

Just waiting for discharge papers now since 12.

Still after 15 days here,I do want out.

I am hanging on until they have finished faffing before I ring my neighbour/friend to pick me up,as he is older and disabled, so not risking him having to hang around for me.

Apparently the Yaris is still there, and remained faithful to me while away.🙂

When I was trying to get mine fixed I spoke to Autoglass first as the lease company designated repairer and they said they had none in stock, don't know how long it could take to get one, maybe 10 days or more..
So then I spent a couple of hours on a fruitless crusade of other fitters and Toyota dealers, before giving up and phoning Autoglass to accept the wait. Only to be told yeah we have it in stock, can fit you in Tuesday, not sure why someone told you no stock!  -Grrr!!!! its almost like the 1st one couldn't be bothered to do a booking. So it may be worth calling at different times until you get someone that cares!

I aM not surprised it is dealer only supply given my car has HUDS and is heated. I will give them until this afternoon and start chasing.
