Where did you get that information from?

PCP is only a financial product, it's seperate from the price of the car. Makes no difference to a dealer if you buy the car with cash, PCP, HP or any other type of finance.

The dealer will only receive their commission as long as the financial product is in place so if say you buy the car on PCP and then settle the finance within say the first month, the dealer stands to get sod all compared to someone who lets their PCP run for the full term. The commission isn't that significant to offer further price reductions tho.

If a dealer were to offer further discounts on top of the finance company for PCP alone then that's one hell of a gamble.

You're talking about the general case, but this is a special circumstance. I've experienced it from previous dealings when me and my uncle were looking at Toyotas (Extra discounts dependent on buying it on finance, not available for an outright purchase), and also when I spoke to a salesman most recently, who wanted me to trade mine in for a new one at what would have been very favourable terms.

I shot that down pretty quick due to the worse spec of the newer cars, plus the loss of the 0% APR, but he did mention that they are getting a lot of money from Toyota UK to get people into new finance packages on new and used cars which allowed them to offer bigger financial incentives than usual.

I don't know if that's still the case, as that was a good few months ago though.

They were fairly quick to knock a few grand off when I went a few weeks ago. They initially told me they couldn't match PCP discount due to Toyota contribution, but after a bit of persuation, they agreed to match it, knocking nearly 5k off in total. Very happy.

Flippin' heck! That's a good chunk for sure. Bah, the more times goes on the more I regret not pushing for more off!!

But I'm glad you have also found there is a contribution from Toyota GB for the PCP and it's not just me!!

Well, cancelled the purchase. Went to see repairs today and touch-up paint on door pillar just fell off when we run finger over it.

Seen an alternative car, so will so how that goes over the coming weeks.

Good stuff we were apprehensive about the car as described by you and about the price also.

Good to hear you went ahead and cancel. The biggest problem on any car that comes with some issues on first sight is that if there are obvious problems that you can quickly spot there will be a lot more hidden. I always walk away if I note a similar situation. You know about cars, and more you know more difficult becomes to pick the right car. Keep looking and when you find it you will recognise it, the right car simply click each box on inspection 🧐, one or two boxes can be left to be desired but there are some that are ultra important and these will shall you whether is the right car or not.
Good luck

We weren't 100from 1st viewing tbh.

Luckily, we have a car so in no rush to just snap up first car. I have noticed though, many of the used examples are not great in some aspects.

On checking MoT histories, majority have tyres, wipers, shock absorber issues. I know tyres and wipers are expected, but surprised about the leaking shocks on a few I've checked.

Many are also either tatty exterior and nice interior or Vice-versa. Not seen one which is at a good standard on both.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice and feedback. Will keep you updated on what we do in the coming weeks.

That's some poor standards from dealership I assume. When I bought my current car at just over 2 year old, it was in great condition inside and out, all the alloys were perfect like it had be refurbished. All tyres had about 6mm left.

This was from a family run business of over 20 years and the bonus, the price were £1k less than anywhere else. Travelled 120miles to buy it, was worth it.

If I could find a good example, I’d travel to look at it. Went to view one 60 miles away, but before I did, they sent photos and interior was badly scratched. Exterior was immaculate.

Registered my interest in another one with local(ish) dealer. Still with current owner until her MK4 arrives in next 10 days or so. Again, MoT states “light misting around front shocks”. Asked them to sort them out under warranty if I decide to buy.

They're not a cheap 2nd hand car atm.

Yeah, they can't expect to sell that at the same price as an immaculate car; I'd totally buy it if the price reflected the damage as I don't mind imperfections so much (Due to the nature of my job, no car is likely to stay unscathed for long!), but they would have to discount it heavily over an undamaged one.

You have to try to catch them as they’re advertised, otherwise, they’re gone.

£15k for a 19 plate in general, £14,250 for 17/18 plates. Most have 35-40k mileage.

Is it too much to ask to expect a car which has been cared for? ☹️

Another question relating to this post - seen a couple of mk3’s have had front ends removed round by where I live recently.

I know they don’t have basic alarms fitted, so, question is, has anyone fitted one at all? If so, which one?

Damn, haven't heard of any in London MK3 got taken for that. Never had the need to fit alarm for mine. That's ghetto the scumbags where you are.

Most recent are in a village train station car park.

No.  If they want it or the whole car they’ll take it so don’t worry.   Life’s too short, just make sure you’re insured.

They know which cars have no alarm systems fitted. They usually target those.
Best park front up against something to reduce access. They will hopefully move on to another target.

Might investigate fitting bonnet switch linked to a relay and horn.

These thieves works on orders. They don’t care if the car has alarm or not. How many videos posted of lifted up cars and alarms are sounding while the men cutting the exhaust to steal the cats? No one cares what happens around. If they want to take it they will.
Car parts theft it’s on the rise since two years and shortages of everything. While waiting 6 weeks for parts when can be ordered and delivered next day by your local handy boys?! No area is secure becomes these fellas drive around and look for cars. Most usual places are large car parks of train stations and hospitals, shops, parks and industrial areas. Quiet Residential streets too. 👍

My take is - make it as difficult as you can. At least then, they may go elsewhere. Doing nothing is not an option for me.

I think you’ll find it already is.  I’ll investigate.  Keep in mind it’s a pathetic sounder.  Smaller even than the factory fitted beeper known as the horn.

Didn’t think they fitted an alarm as standard on mk3, unless you got it on higher specs?

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally purchased a MK3 Hybrid.

Pick it up on Saturday. 67 plate with 25k miles, FDSH. Was a PX at a Kia Dealer; got it for a decent price also.

Sat Nav needs updating, centre wheel caps are fading & TPMS valves are a bit rusty.

Probably cost around £100 to rectify issues.

Happy with purchase though and comes with another 6 months Relax warranty - which Kia Dealer wasn't aware of.

Thanks Flash22.
I did see the valve stems for £7 per wheel. Probably do them straight away.
Wheel caps aren’t cheap, you’re right, but they’re not urgent for now.

I’ll see if my mate can get them cheaper.
