Toyota 2005 catalytic converter replacement

Hi there  – I was wondering if someone had any experience with the catalytic converters manufactured by BM catalysts or any other “cheaper” replacements.

I have a 2005 1.3 Yaris (petrol) that has developed some rust issues and apparently now I have a tiny hole (for now) on the top of the catalytic converter. (see image attached) My mechanic was saying that ideally we would need to replace the whole lot as it’s in one big piece, but of course the ones from Toyota are quite pricey.

In case you had some experience with a replacement that does work, please let me know.

A friend was actuallysuggesting to use a heat resistant glue for that small gap. 😄   As I rarely drive the car (mainly weekends) I’m quite tempted to give that a go to start with.

Hi Gabesz,

I used one of the BM cats to replace a faulty one on my partners C1 last year, after misfueling it and found it couldn't be cleaned out.

Wasn't a 100% perfect fit but it did the job nicely at a fraction of the cost of one of the official ones or come to that even when compared with a used one. Car still runs fine after being used for more than 6 months now and no nasty codes constantly coming back after a short period of time.

Thanks a lot for the feedback @DerekHA.

The reviews I've been reading about BM cats were quite mixed, depending on the cars etc. some positive but quite a few negatives as well. It's annoying cause there's nothing wrong with the cat itself apart from the rust. I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with replacements.

I think I saw another manufacturer as well, just can't remember the name now.
