Battery charge level

Hi all.

I have an EV and have to keep Battery charge between 20% to 80% for Battery longevity.  Would any person know is this the same with the RAV4 Phev, or can you fully charge all the time even if you are not using car for a couple of days.

Regards.

I have a PHEV and tend to charge overnight but usually the car used the next day. I don’t worry too much if the car is fully charged and then left unused. Toyota inset the full charge by only letting the traction Battery reach a pre set level below 100%. My understanding is that as the Battery ages this ‘guard’ band will be ‘released’ to maintain the functionality of the Battery.

One difference between the PHEV and EV is the rate of charge the slower the charge the better for the battery, I think that’s probably more important than fully charging the battery.

Thank you Ernie.

If you do not mind me asking what mpg are you getting....best and worst.

Warm regards

Very difficult to answer as it can vary over the year, topography, distance of trips etc. However, I’d say that overall I’d be getting typically around 46 miles per EV charge, averaged over the year etc.

More difficult to extrapolate the ICE/HEV mpg as this again ranges from low 40’s to low 60’s.

As I generally have a trip profile that is more local than distant I get a lot of local trips covered by a single EV charge even in the cold winter weather. My regular more distant trips are usually around 125/150 miles and I start with a full charge and run on EV until the car automatically switches into HEV mode. I’ve found this the best and easiest way to utilise the traction Battery charge. (Even with the traction Battery at zero SOC, state of charge, there is around 4.5kW of Battery power which enables the HEV mode and full spec’d performance, power, acceleration. This is much more than a hybrid model which I think has around 600W, someone will correct that if it’s miles off.

Example, image MyT app below, I think I got around 44 miles of EV on this and doing the calculations the HEV mode was also around 44mpg, average speed 51mph, motorway 60mph actual and cold weather.

Summer much better figures.

As I’ve said I do a lot of local miles and the MyT app suggests if all my miles were using the ICE/HEV then I’d be returning around 150mpg! Meaningless but just the balance of EV/HEV for me.

‘Hope that helps, others will come back with comments I’m sure
