Main thing with the GTi would be the ROT FACTOR..... :crybaby:

usually they rust around wheel arches/sunroof/taigate and if really bad bottom of doors and underneath - sills etc....

otherwise their  engines are bulletproof providing they've been looked after..... I had one that used to pop out of 5th gear occasionally - dont know if its common or not.... and that's it really....

Rash.

same as b4 but if you get it give it a good service and make sure t has the NGK Platinum plugs in, they may cost more than a std plug but the car runs smoother and they stay in for 60,000 miles

5th gear problems are a known fault. I sold my my previous Gti just before it needed replacing. 6 years ago Toyota dealer wanted about £600 to fix it. Changed the car instead :P

Hello,

If you've been offered it for next to nothing and it still has plenty of M.O.T left, go for it I think you'll like it.

Everybody else seams to have mentioned the problems( rust around all four wheel archs, Sunroof area, rear of sills and around to inner sill/closing panel near part of rear suspension mount, etc.). The rusting sunroof is actually a fault that Toyota admitted when the cars were very young; I know cause mine (along with others in the Midlands) was 're-called' by Toyota in 1995 for an inspection.

Also throwing/jumping out of 5th gear I to have heard is a problem (in fact I have a second hand buyers guide somewhere from 1994 mentioning this as a problem, and that was then!). What destroys the 5th gear is people 'leave' it in 5th a lot of the time and 'labour' the car instead of 'using the gears'.

On more problem is sticking rear calipers/ineffective handbrake. The fact they have disk on the back ensures all the road filth gets round the calipers and starts to seize things up.

Hope you enjoy one (I have for well over 10 years).

Mine started popping out of 4th about 2 years ago, but got it fixed for about £100.

Rust should be the only major fault you'll find though.

It'll p!ss all over RS turbos etc, and you'll love the way it just keeps on reving and reving.

As stated ealier, just make sure you service it regularly to keep it in tip top condition.

Don't worry too much about the timing belt, cos if it does go then it won't damage the engine cos it's a non-interference engine. You'll just be stuck wherever you are for a while till the AA arrive.

 to the GTI!!!!

WELL SAID TOYMOTA!

The cambelt is not a worry if it breaks as it is a 'clear' engine ...providing the head has never been skimed etc.

And yes he's right that 4AGE Engine (a Lotus design originally, believe it or not!) just revs for ever.
