After the emission scam they pulled I wouldn't touch a VW with a bargepole.

Did you lose money?

No i have never owned a VW,  i don't want anything to do with a car manufacturer that purposely made their cars appear more green than they actually were.

I'd always want to look at how the heater and battery cooling systems work and also the braking system, regenerative or whatever. Car Care Nut did an interesting technical video on a Tesla. Conclusion was that the battery, HVAC and software was way more advanced than the rest but the build quality was dreadful

To be fair I think of my Mk4 in a similar way; The drivetrain and chassis are top notch but the general build quality is not fantastic

I found the side pieces of the arm rest had popped off on the way home and had to click them back in, and there are several places where things don't fit together as well as they should!

Fortunately for them, I care very little about relatively minor things like that, as I fully expect the car to be rather more worse for wear by the time I'm done with it many years in the future! :whistling1:   They concentrate on making the important bits reliable and solid, which is what I want!

The car was immaculate with just over 1000 miles on it. I let the dealer keep the car for as long as they wanted to fix the water leak to the drivers footwell (it was clear water) but on the promise that it was looked after. They had it for a month, when I requested to pick it up it was at the back of the compound covered in bird lime, which wasn’t ideal.
Once I started to inspect it I found rust on the white paint because someone had been grinding near it, the front wing had been removed and put back (no idea why), the car was covered in limescale because they left a hose on it for 24 hours in the sun, the water hose had been dragged all over the roof which was black (as per picture) and over the bonnet and was scratched beyond any polishing. There was car polish on various plastic exterior black trims, mud on the back seat, a hole in the carpet and the insulation missing from the drivers side foot well, various trims not installed correctly inside and outside.

We all sat around the board meeting table in the dealership a few days later, they agreed it wasn’t repairable to the original condition I gave it to them in and a financial package was agreed, we walked away vowing no more VW’s.

That is unbelievable!

I try not to tar all dealers with the same brush, as even Toyota franchises have run the gamut, but it's incredible that a dealer would treat a customer's car with such total disdain!

Haha like a kit car, half built the rest of left to the owner 😂

It’s not a Toyota only. I had to do few clips in my gf car on day one she had it.
Rear headliner clips were only positioned in they places but not clipped and the interior mirror cover too. Hahah factory workers are rushing to meet targets. I know these aren’t Bentleys but older cars had less of these issues.

I saw German "engineering" deteriorating through the 1980s in a different field. They turned out solidly built products before that but past the 1990s turned out stuff built to a price but over complicated. From what I've heard from people with German cars the same applies

That's what i have also heard that VWs have for quite a few years turned out build to a price and over complicated stuff, liked the look of the current Polo when it came out but didn't go there and got a Renault Clio then back to Toyota to move into a hybrid.

I can give another example of how bad are made these cars. VW Passat estates from 2016 has tendency to break their rear wiper supply tube and every time you try to wash your rear window all the water goes straight into the boot. Until gets full, seen that with my eyes. Another unbelievably stupid problem on latest Audi A4 front shock has attached cables that for speed sensors and brake pad wear which cables are placed into a tube and this tube gets cut from touching the body when shock vibrates and works ups and downs. Replacement cost fortune. DSG transmission service oil and filter but that’s not all, there are many bolts and a gasket that needs replacement too. , gasket ok but the bolts ?! Cars designed to break often and to be as difficult and complicated to repair that sometimes even their trained mechanics aren’t happy to work on. This says it all.

Audis are very poorly designed. R8 would break front suspension on mild bumps, destroying the body and writing-off the car. A5 had major head gasket problems and lots of engine failures, and spill even small amounts of liquid on the backseat of the A7, and kiss goodbye to the engine ECU located there. Absolute ****.

If you tried to give me a German car, I'd pay you to keep it!

That’s right, but now they have new ceo , probably some new directors, lesson learned from diesel scandal, new electronic car that is also very simple, very old school vw, something that back in the days they were similarly to Toyota of todays. Also they are small cars aren’t bad, even they are actually good, or even one of the best.

I'm not sure when it changed, as german cars *were* well designed originally, which is why they got a reputation for reliability in the first place and why lots of enthusiasts like working on their older cars, but that reputation is really not deserved with their more recent cars.

I do like the Up!, stupid name not withstanding. It's simple and solid. Fun to drive, very nippy. I *whispers* actually think it's a better car than the Aygo :fear: :bag:

I was impressed with the Up! except for the ASG gearbox. It was that fateful day I chanced upon the Yaris hybrid, and didn't look back... 😍🥰
