Hi,Im looking to buy a toyota yaris 1l 2009 car. Im going to be doing motorways journeys, maybe even upto 88miles each day. Would a 1L be suitable? I heard that i should aim fior higher Ones like 1.2L or 1.4L. Would this car struggle at high speeds.

Not really if the car is in good condition regularly serviced and MOT history. To abide to the speed limit is not a problem. It will take a few seconds longer to build up to the required speed, the car might struggle a little on steep hills, you may have to allow a longer time and space to pass out slower traffic, but 90 miles a day should not be a problem with a bit of patience and sensible driving.

I had the 1.3 MK1, I would say that had decent power for motorway in a small car. The 1L would really run out of puff pretty early. So I suggest the 1.3 t spirit if your budget stretch that far, or consider 2007-2008 ones.

If there is no clean air zone in your area, for the quoted daily mileage I would go for the 1.4 diesel.

It would be more stressful & more effort to use a 1.0 on the motorway. A 1.33 would be much better, a diesel even more suitable

TBH, having driven a 1.33 Mk2 Yaris and a 1.0L Aygo on the motorway, the 1.33 isn't that much better.

The problem is the 1.33VVTi is built for headline-power figures so you have to rev the absolute mammaries off it to get any power as it's all at the top end; Below say 3-4k rpm I found it almost painfully gutless, especially as I'd come from the 1.4L 1ND-TV turbodiesel, which absolutely hauled from 1800rpm up (God I loved that engine! It was so gooood  ).

In hindsight I wish I'd gone for the 87HP 1.3 instead of the 100HP 1.33 - People in the forum did say the older one had better torque at the bottom end but I didn't believe them! (How can 100HP be worse than 87HP?? Now I know... Peak HP figures are meaningless!)

The 1.0L doesn't actually feel that much weaker than the 1.33 as it doesn't have such a peaky torque curve - You still have to rev the nuts off it to get any shove, but you expect that with such a small engine. The 1.0L is also more reliable than the earlier 1.33L engines, which were prone to burning engine oil, and its 5-speed gearbox is more robust than the slightly fragile 6-speed the 1.33L has.

That said, if you can get your hands on one of the rarer 1.8L SR's those are supposedly quite fun :naughty:, albeit a far amount thirstier!

Given how many Aygos, Picantos, Up!'s etc. fly past me on the motorway I think the 1.0L would be fine tho' - Its acceleration is NOT fast; It takes a while to build up speed, but it will get up to 70mph an hold it just fine, and you can always downshift if you need a bit more power as these jappy petrol engines are very revvy!

It will do it but on longer motorway drives the bigger equals the better.
Lower rpm, less noise, less engine wear, same or similar fuel consumption. But as others said if it’s in good condition there is no reason to be worried.
