Engine coolant - halford brand OAT safe to put in 2017 Aygo?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is a silly question, asked too often.

I have a 2017 Aygo and it is low on engine coolant. I went to Halfords to buy more and they suggested OAT pink Halfords Essentials Anti-freeze and Coolant. However I have since heard bad things about trusting Halfords advice, so I was hoping someone might just be able to confirm if this is suitable before I go putting it in the car?

Thank you for any help!!!!

My car age is same as yours, but never needs to top up the coolant, you may need to find out the reasons why the coolant is low. I would go to get the same Toyota coolant, not Halfords coolant.

This is the first time in the 3.5 years I have had it that it has needed topping up, its just getting towards the 'low' marker. Ill be honest and say Im not sure what level it was at when I first purchased it. Im trying to do better and increase my knowledge and look after the car more.

Howdo.

There are two types of coolant, depending on what they are based on, it's best not to mix them.   Silicon is one, I forget the other.

https://parts.toyota.com/go/genuine-toyota-service-fluids.html seems to indicate you shouldn't use silicate based so by the sounds of this https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/antifreeze/halfords-oat-antifreeze-concentrate-5-litres-798785.html the Halfords stuff should be fine.

is the coolant pink colour? normally the coolant level is in the middle between max and min, if it's just close to the min, you may not need to top up, but need to keep an eyse on it.

Toyota have used their Super Long Life coolant (pink) as factory fill since approx 2003, which is a long life hybrid OAT coolant. The Toyota coolant only requires to be first changed at 10 years. For topping up, just get the Toyota coolant.

I agree, if it's needed to top up, go to Toyota coolant, the coolant level in my car has never changed since I bought it 6 years ago.

Yes you can use any oat coolant ready mix or concentrate to top up how’s best to stick with Toyota original ones. Coolant may need top up fork time to time as usually when very hot in the summer can evaporate a bit., and again it depends on mileage and how the car been used. Keep an eye on engine temperature and heating in the car, if anything feels odd best to ask someone to check for you. If you need to top up coolant every week then there is something wrong. 👍
