Rusty brakes, what to do?

This is what happens when you don't use your car for 5 months.

This is the driver's side, it's the worst of the two because this is the side that gets the driving rain.

Have you cleaned them?
The rust on the friction surfaces looks very evenly built up and it won’t be a problem however what could be are stuck slider pins and stuck calliper pistons. These two are very important when servicing brakes. 👍

I've given them a bit of a clean up.

The sliders were in perfect condition but, as they are not ver expensive, I've ordered an axle set.

That looks very shiny , what did you use to clean them?
Don’t forget to check pistons too. 👍

I cleaned the discs with a wire brush, Emery cloth and elbow grease.

The pistons are perfectly free to move.

I'm not finished with them, I'm to have another go.

I SORNed the car at the start of October, I'm not going to tax it until 1st April.  So, I have another week.

It will have been laid up for 6 months by the time I start using it.

I use citric acid to remove rust. All I do is mix some up in warm water and soak the parts. Works like a charm.

I use a brake cleaner spray from time to time... you just sprey it and it looks like new all the time.

buy some of them it good to have ...

Thanks Moshe. Good call. I've got some brake cleaner in my garage. Never thought to use it to clean off the rust though.

Brake cleaner spray on rust not gonna work, it only cleans the oil and grease.  Rust needs proper mechanical clean or acids, vinegar, sand blast etc. 👍

i also from time to time go under the car and spray some wax-spray on all the rubber parts to keep them from rain and so ... 5 min working with the brake spray, ones a month keep all like new.

20230330_115636.thumb.jpg.50f8e86ebbae0fb3187926e7805679da.jpgUpdate;

The new slider pins arrived. Unfortunately, one of the threads on one bolt hadn't been cut properly.  I now have a new bolt, everything has been cleaned up so I'm ready to assemble it.

I took the opportunity to clean the inside of the wheels when they were off.

10.07 is the amount of meat left on the four year old pads.

16.76mm Is the current thickness from a total thickness of 18.80mm when they were new.  So, I've scuffedd off 2mm in four years.

No brake cleaner or other such cans of spray were used in the cleaning of any brake parts as, it's a complete waste of money.
