I'm about to buy an Aygo X with the 175/65x17 H tyres.  Not that I'll (hopefully) have to worry about the cost of replacements for a while (currently £88+ Falkens seem to be the cheapest) but what's the opinion on here.... Do you think tyre prices for this size will drop over the next year or two as other manufacturers produce in this size, or will they always be expensive because of the Aygo's oddball sizing?

My own opinion is that the Aygo has always been one of Europe's best selling A-segment cars & with some manufacturers having pulled out of the segment, Toyota's sales volumes are not likely to diminish.  Quite possibly the opposite.

I think this tyre size will become more popular as we move towards more affordable electric city-cars / superminis & that a few more manufacturers will start producing & costs will drop over the next couple of years.

Quite possible as the aygo X gets sold more and other supermini may use that size too. A big factor will be energy and food prices to be kept low and materials cost also to reduce.

I have a Yaris hybrid on order. Tyre size is 195/55/16, once that is done will change it to 205/55/16 - one of the cheapest tyre profile. Goodyear EGP2 cost £305 for a set atm, about 4 weeks ago were under £280 a set.

Certainly in time more manufacturers will offer tyres in the Aygo X's size.

A previous example of a car having an unusual size of tyre when first introduced into the UK was the Verso S, where the original tyre was a specific size only made by Dunlop in Japan. Nowadays there is a choice of tyre manufacturers offering this size from budget ranges upwards.

Tyres with odd sizes will always be on the expensive side. Aygo X tyres won’t become any cheaper unless more car manufacturers starts using the same sizes. One car manufacturer does not make enough volume to reduce the price imo., even if they sell a lots of Aygo’s. What could happen is to have eventually a large choice, more brands to offer tyres in this sizes., which is still a good thing.

In excess of 60,000 Aygo X were sold in Europe between March 2022 and November 2022 - 2022 being the first partial year of production.

As time goes by, sales in subsequent years will be more than this - probably around 80,000-90,000 per year based on sales of the previous model.

Consider the fact that owners usually replace more than one tyre at a time - often either 2 or all 4.

Certainly some other tyre manufacturers will want a share of this limited sector, whether or not other car manufacturers adopt the same size, so the assumption they will leave the market to the OE tyre manufacturer isn't going to happen.

In today's world of increased inflation, tyres may not necessarily be much cheaper, but there will probably be a wider choice to suit varying budgets - including budget ranges.

My thoughts based on experience with bmw i3 and their odd tyre sizes. Still after 10 years very few opt available on the market and these cars been sold quite well.

Well Continental have recently introduced summer and all season tyres, and Semperit all season tyres in the Aygo X size - which adds to the tyres in this size from Falken, Goodyear and Michelin. So I'm certain more will follow - including the Asian brands for those on a budget.

As said elsewhere it is the tyres for the 18 inch Aygo X wheels that are a crazy price at the moment, can be nearly £100 more per tyre than the 17inch tyres.

Just to update this thread, Aygo X tyres in 175/60/ 18 are now more expensive than ever, even if there is a bit more choice than there used to be.  Ideally id like all season tyres, but the premium ones out there, Continentals, seem quite noisy at 71db, so not sure what to do?

I intentionally went for the Pure as I wanted the 17" rims. Bit more rubber depth and more tyre options.

Just go with Michelin e premacy, probably the best tyres for your car .
No need of an all season tyres for most of the south. All season are only better in snow and ice. Good summer tyres can do as good as all season on dry and wet down to 0-5C°. All seasons does the same and loose grip,at lower than 5C° they also became harder similar to summer tyres.
But if you are really into all season Continental seems to offer the best .
71 or 72dB aren’t noisy, this is just a outside drive by noise which means nothing for inside noise levels.

I went for the Pure as well, not just because of the wheels , but I do consider it a plus for the Pure trim, unfortunately I had a puncture a couple of months ago, and the cheapest I could get online cost £114.99 , crazy money for a city car tyre. Only other downside really is I miss the climate control air con.

I would have gone even more basic if it was an option. I dont need anything the extra trims bring and the electronics are more a distraction. Just wanted a simple small car and this is about as simple as you can buy these days. I did buy the spare wheel kit though, never felt comfortable with just goop and crossed fingers. The tyres are about £25 more than my old car. Not too much of a hit. Probably still get the Falkens as they are quietest and the Aygo can get a bit noisy on rougher roads at speed. They say humans can just detect a 3db difference so I doubt the difference is huge from other manufacturers. Keeping the pressures well up helps reduce the noise a bit. Weirdly on delivery they set all the tyres to 40p.s.i, that was a bit too much even for me.

I have to say , I checked on the day of delivery and for the first time the tyre pressures were spot on.

Nooo don't get ePrimacy, they're awful, esp. in the wet - Just get normal Primacy 4/4+ they're much better.

ePrimacys are for 6000ton EVs with terrible range to try and give them a bit more range at the expense of... everything. They will be like chinese ditchfinders on a car as light as the Aygo, esp. in the wet.

Really the Michelin e premacy are that bad?
“e” - it is very dodgy letter in anything and especially tyres but all that when stands for “economy “ but in this case this not just for efficiency  but also for electric cars , hybrids and fuel efficient cars like Aygo x.

I had my rental Aygo X equipped with these and I truly liked the car and the tyres. I drive it for 400km town, motorways, country lanes in southern Spain, the weather was mixed including rain on the motorway and these tyres were brilliant. Minimum road noise, excellent road cushion, and nothing to point towards poor grip. I did a lot of hill starts and this where you need a lot of grip , absolutely no issues and no wheels spins at all.
Some people really push their cars to the limit and expect rally performance characteristics from their eco oriented cars, these two aren’t comparable.

For me these will be the best tyres for Aygo x currently and buy them over Falkens any day. I seen a Goodyear offer pure winter tyres , but these aren’t suitable for uk climates. And for the all season these seems good

Yes tyres aren’t cheap at these sizes but at least there are choices. 👍

2023 ADAC Summer tyre tests they came 38th out of 50. Scored poorly in wet conditions. Not awful, not great. Adequate.

Ok, adequate is all we need.

Usually tests made by any organisations like RAC, AA, ADAC aren’t best to learn and understand cars, safety, driving ability, performance and all related. Those can give some helpful information sometimes but in many ways it is not the best or correct.
The true reality is very different and only can be learned and obtained by real words situations and experiences done by car owners, car enthusiasts and reviews made by the general public.
Even the guy from tyre reviews although is a competent man and does a good job often share information about tyres that is not exactly what an average car driver really need. Not many will  actually care a two milliseconds difference or how the car inspires you confidence when sliding it in high speed cornering. What is more important here is to know how well average performance will be, will the car remain stable in normal driving conditions, will you stop on time in an emergency, how long tyres will last , how tyres performance changes with time and mileage.
These are more important characteristics that only can be obtained by using the tyres yourself or trust the ones who had personal experience with the tyres, cars in question. I can’t say much about Michelin e premacy as I only used them in a week , but my impressions were good.

I've had no issues with them (E-Primacy) in the year /10k miles on my Aygo X.

Yes, in the wet they can understeer - but any tall & narrow tyre will at some point. They don't understeer unexpectedly and only start to when any other tyre is likely to start losing grip too. Unless you drive like a moron, or have no idea about driving dynamics which will cause loss of grip (sharp steering, lunging on the Brakes, bad driving techniques) then you'll be fine.

I've never had any issues with them in all weathers & temperatures. And in the dry they grip fantastically well!

They aren't the literal worst, but they are designed for EV SUVs - The sidewalls and compound are stiffer and harder, to reduce rolling resistance and increase tyre life, as EV SUVs tend to mulch normal tyres because they are so heavy.

This gives them very low rolling resistance, so good for mpg, and also longevity because the rubber is harder, but it compromises them a lot compared to the normal Premium Touring-class tyre like the Primacy4, PremiumContact, EfficientGrip Performance etc.. They're not the worst by far, but they are to the Primacy4 what the Primacy4 is to the PilotSport4/5.

The thing is budget tyre brands use the same tactic - Harder compound for longer tyre life, and they have similar behaviour - Decent grip in the dry, poor in the wet.

For the amount you are paying for the ePrimacys, I personally think the tradeoff in grip is unacceptable - You'd almost be better off getting a mid-range or even budget tyre and get similar performance but at half the cost.

There are much better tyres out there for similar money is all I'm saying.
