Gearbox operation poor requires actuator and possibly clutch

I am asking for help to decide what to do now with my mother's Toyota Aygo 1L petrol semi autocar HY59 KFW 100,000?  miles with this fault diagnosed from Toyota Bath main dealer, Report as follows ,,
'Gearbox operation poor requires actuator and possibly clutch, if its worn prematurely because of the actuator.' and quoted £2,425.00.
Considering the cars value now this figure is not acceptable but I am asking if non Toyota garages can do these seemingly specialised work ?

This computer part is £1000 and they  says may as well replace clutch whilst you’re there parts only £100 but the labour is £700/800 so with vat that’s £2400 repair.
This is what I know..Actuator which control the gear system which has a ecu ( computer ) they would only put a whole new one in part £1000,
Appreciate any advice you can give ie garages with lowerheads if they have the Toyota soft ware or is it time to sell ?? Thanks BB

I'm not an owner of one of these, but, have you investigated if a local Peugeot or Citroen dealer could do this work for less?  Their prices for other 'Aygo' work are sometimes more economical.

The actuators in the auto box, I have read, can be stripped, cleaned and re-greased, if I understand this correctly.  A big saving potential, but not a route that a main dealer knows about or wants to know about - too much possible aggravation for them.

Hopefully someone local to you spots this post (the more so now I've 'bumped' it) and has a recommendation.  Plenty of others have had trouble getting these 'boxes fixed, so it might be worth considering a longer journey to get the 'right' garage that's got a good track record  with this type of repair.

To that end, forum poster @flash22 is in Kent, in the London end of it (50 miles odd, but only an hour?!), I think, perhaps he's got some suggestions, he has lots of great info on these.

Clutches do seem to live a hard life in these types of 'box, it seems replacing after 30,000 miles use is normal.

Do you have any codes ? Get a second opinion asap

no need for any special software, it can all be done manually

Get the actuator cleaned, and the actuator dust cover fitted, this fixes a lot of actuator issues

Question for Flash22 . Do you know of garage that could fix the problem ?. South East england is Ok, Car is  in Wells but often comes up to me in SE London . Codes ?? Had a diagnostic from Toyota Bath would it  be their report which haven't got,

Would the AA find the fault codes if they came out for a home start?? Thanks again BB

Sadly i can't recommend anywhere but, if you find out the codes that would be going in the right direction, if the dealer has charged for looking at it ask for a report what they can usually print off or email it

P0900 is the common code for the actuator

Has anything been spilt in the car ? That is a selector problem, not the clutch/actuator

It's either the selector in the car or the position sensor or the gear actuator - try a gear box reset/relearn/initialisation

Thanks Flash 22, Independent garage has the car now,Seems capable has done one before ,Codes not showing up again after he deleted main dealers codes to do his own,He is puzzled now what to do.Any suggestions??

From garage man this morning On rediagnostic read it still has no codes returned, so I have no pointers of which parts to repair / replace or relearn.  If you want me to replace the clutch and actuator on a hope then I will but with no codes I cannot be 100% it will make any difference.
Sorry for the long text but hope it makes sense.Garage man says no codes have come back. But it seems to be electrical more than mechanical problem. So no point replacing actuator/ clutch ALSO added I don't like replacing parts without knowing if it will help. Lots of garages are happy to have a stab in the dark and just start replacing parts, I don't feel good replacing say the clutch and actuator and charging you nearly £1800 when it may not make much difference. Saying that it may fix the fault but you need to decide if your happy gambling that much money...

Latest from garage man THE SAGA CONTINUES

I do have a good auto electric man about 30 minutes away but yes it's a few hours work at 80ph plus vat. You kinda need to decide if you want to call it quits with this car or start investing and keep going until its fixed. You could end up spending more than the value of the car..
