Get rid or repair?

Hi everyone, I would appreciate any advice on what to do with my Auris.

I bought it in October as a Christmas present for my son. It is a 1.33 Auris TR with 117000 miles (2010). It seemed really nice in metallic grey with an unmarked interior. It cost 1300 from a private seller.

I have driven it now and again and it's good if a little slow with a slight rasp to the exhaust but I thought nothing of it.

I have found out the exhaust needs replacing which could be the cost of the car. I am not sure whether to sell with this declared (so probably at a loss) or put more money into it.?

Anyone any thoughts or advice? Thanks

The exhaust system has several parts or sections, the front catalytic convertor, a middle one and the rear silencer. I think you need to narrow the diagnosis down a bit tbh.

When you talk of 'putting more money into it', that suggests you have already had issues of some kind.

I agree with Mooly. Why does the complete system need replacing? Individual sections should be available depending on what the issue is. You need to be more specific. I wouldn't expect a catalytic converter to be £1300 if that is the problem.

If the car is reliable and running properly without any other major issues then it must be cost effective to replace what is required? Buy a different car and it's history/reliability would be unknown. Better the Devil you know and all that.

Get a quote from a garage you trust to get the exhaust done. As others have said, it's unlikely you'll need the entire system replaced.

At that price bracket, any replacement car you buy is very likely to need something done to it to keep it on the road.  If you've got a car there that you think is in good condition otherwise, and your son likes it, then just get it done.

I will agree with all comments. 👌

Even It could be whole system needs replacement because the exhaust pipes comes as one huge peace to include all components plus separate rear silencer. If it’s rusted away it may need to be totally replaced.
If there are no any other issues, aftermarket exhaust may be fitted at half the price and the car be good for another few years. 👍

Or get one from a scrapyard?

Agree with all previous replies.

Poster please provide more information. Is it the whole exhaust system that needs to be replaced or part of it.

Maybe check with another shop for a 2nd opinion.

Thanks for the feedback.

The engine light came on with a check-engine warning message. I took it to Toyota as they did a recall on it, and diagnostics for free. The error was the emissions caused by a bad exhaust. They quoted £1600. I thought it was just silly main-dealer pricing. So I took it to National Tyres and I was able to have a good look underneath myself, and it is really rotten.

With the engine running you can see it leaking from behind the back box from a joint that has been bodged with putty. There is a leak in the centre and also the flange which meets the first cat on the manifold. This flange has apparently disintegrated.

I'm surprised it is so quiet, but there is rasp when accelerating. The car seems really slow as well, could that be too much back pressure from a bad exhaust?

However, Kwik Fit this morning didn't say anything about the manifold/flange, and quote just for a back box and mid section = £300.

I've spoken to my local mechanic friend and he is going to take a look as well.

I guess I panicked at two quotes of £1600 and £1300.

If kiwi fit offer that, I’d truly try a local independent garage who I’m sure will be far more honest and cheaper

go cheaper and don't replace - get it welded!

Kwik Fit pluck prices out of the air. I remember once phoning them for the price of a replacement cat for a Citroen Xsara.

KF 'That'll be £575 including fitting'

Me 'What? National Tyres have just quoted me £250'

KF ' OK sir, we'll do it for £240'

I usually went to special shop for electric and exhaust system. They know how to fix sections, customing some parts and make perfect fit. The most expensive part is the catalytic converter. The rest of the system, we can use after market and they works just fine for a decade or more. The aftermarket catalytic converter only worksfor short period, it contains less than 1/2 metals as OEM.
