Hybrids don’t have a conventional starter motor that runs off the 12v Battery. Instead, one of the hybrid motors (there are actually two) cranks the ICE to start it. This is why you need at least some charge in the hybrid Battery to start the ICE.

Sorry, this stuff gets bandied about so much I use acronyms because typing the full thing out every time gets old quickly!

So, I mean there's no starter motor like you get in normal cars, just two big high voltage electric motors. (They're called MG1 and MG2 (MG=Motor-Generator) - MG2 is connected to the wheels, and drives/regen-brakes them, while MG1 is connected to the ICE - Internal Combustion Engine (i.e. the petrol engine), and is responsible for starting it and also doing all sorts of clever hard to explain stuff)

The electric motors run at something like 100-200 volts, so the 12 volt Battery is no use in powering them - The big traction Battery (Which *is* 100-200 volts!) is the only thing that can power them, so it has to have enough charge to spin MG1 to crank the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine, i.e. The petrol engine) and start it running.

Well I'm getting a Hybrid, but I went for the posh one in the finish, the CT200h which in my book is a Auris but with a better trim level, can't be doing with a small engine with a turbo, the turbo on our other car a petrol Mokka went and supposed to be easy to replace, took me all day to remove it, absolute pitta, fought me all the way and nearly gave in, I'm changing the turbo before I sell on, instead of palming it off it as I don't want to sell on a dog, with issues.(but some would)

Good choice, well done. 
These are something between Prius and Auris. Good cars with some+ and - over the other two. Catalytic converter plate for protection if it doesn’t have one is a good idea. Regular service on time with quality parts and fluids and you want have any troubles. Hybrid Battery cooling fan filter clean or replacement also important to keep hybrid Battery happy. Enjoy your car 🚙

I think the motors actually run at about 600 volts, the inverter converts the 200v from the Battery to 3 phase AC for the motors (just being a nerd)
