Hi all

The Corolla hybrid has been out for around 5 years now, right. With my driving this will be just over 100k miles

I am wondering who has the highest miles/kms Corolla hybrid here - how many? Anyone with 200k miles/300k kms?

Any issues so far?

Have you changed gearbox oil? - I know this has been discussed elsewhere....

How long are you planning to keep your car for?

There are examples that clocked 100k and over if you look on auto trader and other similar websites. Since Corolla is very similar to Auris and Prius and those has high miles examples I would expect the Corolla to do just as well as her sister cars.
Transmission fluid “Toyota ATF WS” can last the life of the car, if you prefer you can change at 60k miles intervals. I do mine and to date I had no issues or any unusual noises with the transmission. Previously mentioned a one year old Corolla with 170k miles in USA. The biggest enemy to Corolla and any other Toyota model particularly in uk aren’t the mileage but the rust. If you drive often on motorways especially during winter season regular car washes and under carriage washes helps maintain this and slows down the process. 👍

I can't see many Corollas hybrid over 100k in Autotrader.co.uk. There are few over 300k km in mobile.de

I was wondering if there is someone with such an example and experience in the group here, but interestingly no one so far. No doubt it is similar to the Auris and Prius, also no doubt it will be a reliable car, just again......good if you hear from someone who's done it - like you Tony.

On another hand I've got a little theory, that not many people in Western Europe are keeping their cars over 100k miles( not good for the environment ).

There was a research in Japan few years ago, if everyone keep their cars for at least one more year the C02 globally will drop by 3% - applies for any modern gadgets we use every day. Tbh If I have the budget I would probably want a new car every 3 years - this is the world we live in. We just want more and more. Think I went too far😀

There’s a guy on one of the Facebook pages that has done over 240,000 miles in a 1.8 hybrid. He’s a courier in USA.

I saw a 2.0 hybrid for sale with 140,000 miles. Seem pretty good for longevity

Indeed, cars should be kept by the first owner at least for 5 years or more, however  many new cars are lease cars, or company ones and they have to go after only two or three years. If privately bought and owned a Toyota hybrid makes a lot of sense as they age very well, they are very reliable and easier to work on and cheaper to fix if something goes wrong. They are also very popular and there are original Toyota used parts widely available.
My personal opinion is that a new Toyota until paid off if bought with a finance its a liability, but then after it’s an asset until reaches certain age and mileage and at that point it will become a liability again because a major components will be wearing off and need replacement. The good news is that sensibly driven and maintained this liability return won’t be at least until the car reaches well over 10, perhaps 13 and more years and over 200k miles. I enjoy my old car a lot every day. The car drives really well, everything works as it should and except some usual stone chips and some rust plus the usual wear which actually it’s not a lot the car looks as good as new. The only issue I have since last year is the paint has started to peals off on both rear doors, and the hybrid Battery seems to get fully charged quicker than usual but still holds charge well and efficiency is good, currently around 54mpg. Ah, and oil consumption went on the higher side, now drinks a lot. , it’s a triple fuel , petrol + electric + oil 😂👌🏁

I recently joined a Facebook group and there are many many examples of cars over 500k miles, some even 1 million - most in USA. Lots of Toyotas, Lexus and Hondas there + their big Ford's F, Ram, etc pick up trucks. It seems the Americans tend to keep their cars much longer then Europeans. Interesting examples there

Came onto the UK/European market in 2019, so 4 years.

I used to be member of a Mini forum and there was a guy in his 80's who had done over 500,000 miles in his Mini 😲

He lives in America and thought nothing of going out for a 2000ml drive, very interesting guy, often wondered if he's still motoring.

Maybe, maybe not, but I gotta hope both are still motoring on.👏👏. That’s a lot of mileage for a wee Mini🚗.

A few years ago I often used to see an elderly chap driving around in a Morris Minor which was hand-painted in red oxide primer. I happened to my mention it to my dad one day and he said 'Oh yes I remember him, he had that same car in the 1960s and it was painted in red oxide then.'

I would be interested to know how many miles he had done in that!

How much oil consumption now Tony? Sounds like she’s showing her age a little cosmetically & mechanically sadly. The hybrid Battery is probably repairable if it’s getting a little tired, but an engine rebuild too, as well as paintwork is a lot for a car of that age. Still planning to run her into the ground?

Now oil consumption it’s probably about 2ltr per 10k miles. Definitely shows signs of wear. My plan is to keep it until major repair needed, anything that I can’t do myself and it’s expensive will mark the end of her service. She has been the most reliable car I ever had. Still drives really good . Thanks 👍

I am really surprised there is no one with over 100k miles(160k km) on his Corolla hybrid here.

So who has the highest miles(km)then? I am with a MY22 and got almost 22k miles(35.2k km) already - no issues so far

I usually imagine folks who do more over 50 000 miles/year don't post on forums.
In MyT app I can view how many hours I spent driving the car and averaging around 10 000 mile/year myself the totaled number of hours is surprisingly high.

Yes, and many high mileage drivers will be in leased company cars where they have it for a couple of years then hand it back and get another. The car is just a tool of their job so they don't really pay much attention to it.

Same with me, however my tool its also my own property bought and maintained with my money and by myself. This actually gives me an opportunity to learn and understand these cars well, so really enjoyable journey. Previously done 50k miles per year, now for the last year only 34k miles and my usual work shifts are 12+ hours, I don’t drive all that time but do spent most of the time in the car, therefore it’s not only a transport but also my office too. The car is old Auris hybrid and it is very similar to Corolla 1.8 hybrid. These cars are really good for that job. The only thing they really need is regular checks and maintenance on time. After all that years and mileage 242k currently the car just started to show its signs of age, the rust has started to form on the rear arches and underneath, not too bad though, both doors the paint is peeling off, the carpets are a bit worn hear and there plus the leather part of the seats shows some ageing and the driver seat has a small crack in its bolster. That’s pretty much all issues, cosmetic only.
All auxiliaries work as usual, AC, heating, lights exterior and interior, windows, the music, no screen in this car, reverse camera, auto dim mirror, e windows, , central locking, seat belts, seat recliner, I use that function at least 3 -4 times a night to have my breaks and usual naps, this equals to over 5000 times the driver seat has been reclining up and down 🫢
If you take care of your Corolla’s they will perform as good or even better. There is absolutely no doubt about it. 👌

I've always been looking after my previous cars myself. I've learnt how to do basic service, I've done gearbox oil change, brake pads, discs, even calipers to my old cars. Been cleaning throttle body and EGR too, and once changed auxiliary belt on my Avensis. I miss touching here and there😀. Can't do this with the Corolla, although thinking of getting the wheels off and do a bit of a preventive cleaning on the brakes. I don't know what engine Oil is the dealer using, but as other people suggest I am almost sure it isn't the 0w16. I guess, I will have to live with this for now and not bother at all.

You can do brake service, dismantling, cleaning and putting back all together, change pads and discs whenever time comes up for these.
You can also do egr cleaning perhaps after the first 100k miles, wheels rotating,, regular valets, hybrid Battery filter replacement and cabin filter, Wiper Blades all these little bits and peaces that usually the dealers skip on these little but important jobs.  Some tasks require slightly different approach and techniques but there are tons of video on YouTube with Prius examples, which are very similar cars. If you really enjoy doing anything on your car even it’s brand new there are still opportunities.
One thing I prefer and recommend to everyone is to not touching anything if it’s not broken or try to improve something that doesn’t need improvement, for example adding extra sound proofing, extra rust protection, unnecessary accessories etc. Keeping the car stock and original, driving sensibly and maintaining on time are the key factors for long and trouble free motoring. 🏁👌

4th gen hybrid since prius 2016 are much more reliable and less issues even after 200k miles.  No EGR, head gasket,  brake booster,  or oil consumption issues that some gen 3 1.8L have at around 200-300k miles.  Corolla 1.8 hybrid used prius gen 4 power train and braking system although the disc and hub size are different.

If we drive in winter with salt,  spray the suspension parts with fluid film or similar wool fat compound help a lot.  Especielly in truck and suv with body on frame like land cruiser or Hillux. Body parts are well rust protected but not frame, links, struts,  exhaust hangers,  and control arms.

We maintain hybrid just like regular cars. Simple.  I recommend 0w-16 and do every 5-7k miles/ 8 months if you do a lot of short trips <5 miles per trip.  It helps a lot on preventing oil consumption issues after 100k miles.
