2014 Yaris Hybrid completely dead electrically.

I had some issues with the 12v Battery during lockdown but managed to charge it up by recommended method from hybrid Battery and was fine for two years. It is probably always in some jeopardy as my wife does only short journeys. But yesterday it had two long runs. One in daylight but coming back with headlights on. This morning completely dead. No lights on dashboard, power button doesn't work and car doesn't lock. Boot is stuck locked. Mechanical key only. So I tried to jump start from special terminal inside fuse box. This worked last time via same lithium charging pack but made no connection. I'm guessing Battery, now 8 years old has collapsed and shorted so no circuit? Any thoughts?

Most likely yes. A new Battery is the next step. You can measure the old one just to confirm it is dead indeed.

Hi Dave, it does sound at 8 years old your Battery has packed in.

May be wise just to replace it now 👍

That's the plan. Looks tricky getting to it via rear seat removal and trim for DIY so have to figure if Toyota dealer will collect it as it is immobile.

So the new issues are:- £285 (vehicle won't roll as locked in park mode)  to transport to Toyota to supply and fit new Battery for £145! Existing Battery showing 3.9v measured from jump terminal to chassis ! What Battery I can use to DIY replace auxiliary is conflicting. I can get a small sealed lead acid battery (Bosch) with same or better spec for abot £60 but selling sites seem to be saying not compatible and want me to be a Yusaka one for over £150!
If I could just get some power to fire the thing up I could drive it to Toyota.

Is the car parked somewhere where access to the back seat is nice and straightforward?

I guess that you are unable to get a Battery charger on it overnight, or you don't have one? (As you mention; just to get it started the once to drive to the Toyota dealer).

What part of Essex are you in? I don't live so very far away from some parts of Essex (I'm in Bedfordshire).

Hi, close to Basildon. In road outside house at the moment. Easy access to rear seat though. If I could get that up maybe a direct charge would be enough. Measured at just 3.9V seems very low though. I think I may have established that for mainly safety reasons they are AGM hence the high price. Maybe I could temporarily use cheap lead acid Battery to get it started and to the dealer?

No need to tow it or get it moved, get the correct Battery for the car S34B20R its an AGM Battery

if you need to roll the car forward or backwards, you can pop the shift release cover off what's down by the gearstick and push the release and move the selector

can you take a pic of where you are jumping it from with the pack - is the pack holding a charge ? If it's not been used in some time it may be weak/dying its self - jump it with another car, it should be enough to open the locks

be aware you can not flat tow a hybrid, the front wheels need to be off the ground

jump start the car and get it in ready mode, you may have to place the fob near the start button, as it turns the keyless off, do not turn the car off if you intend to drive it

If you are going to end up buying a Yuasa as per the factory-fitted one, then the Toyota dealer Battery price is actually very competitive, believe it or not!

Not as competitive if it takes £300 to get it to the dealer! I'm still not sure if the predicamnet is fully understood. Car is fully dead, not jump starting as before probably because a Battery that is 3.9V is probably shorted. Car can only be moved by lifting on to low loader. Nobody will supply compatable Battery - tried ringing about ten major UK Battery suppliers and all say they don't do one. If ask why they say because it is a hybrid and if you say what is different they don't know basically!

It's an AGM Battery made By Yuasa S34B20R, the dealer is about the right price - there is no aftermarket replacement

Don't panic !!

Have you tried to jump it with a car ? As soon as it powers up you will hear it, and the door locks will be active, You will have to start the car by putting the key near the start button,

Hybrids can be front wheel lifted

A long shot but remember someone saying you need to be careful when connecting the pack as the *jumper point in the fuse box only has metal on one side so even though you have a fully charged jump pack it may not be connected properly.

*something liker that

Preface lift didn't have a tag, you have to wedge a screwdriver in the gap

Thanks for your helpful suggestions but most I have tried. Jumper pack worked fine before on the specified terminal. A normally fully discharged lead acid Battery would be at least 10-11v not 3.9v. Almost certainly shorted due to plate failure. I have now managed to get back seat up and get to the terminals directly. Still no response from charger. On contacting Toyota parts depot they can get me their one for £142 incl. which is the cheapest I have seen so I have ordered that and should have it Friday. Shows that the fitting service is good value! Now I have the seat up I should be able to fit it ok. I'll report back and let you know how i get on.

Remember to send them your reg for their paperwork

Thanks - saw that when looking but turns out one direct from Toyota parts is a bit cheaper!

Thanks for that Gerg. That's what I did in the end as it was indeed the cheapest. Also shows what a good deal the fitting price is!

The Battery comes out the front of the seat, so you need to pop the trim off to access the clamp

take the neg of the Battery inside the car and use your new one and a set of leads to pop the locks from under the bonnet

£150 delivered isn't bad, especially if you have no other transport

done this Battery swap more than a dozen times in the last 3 or so years

UK equivalent size is an 055 the only AGM being the Yuasa S34B20

I have now fitted the Toyota replacement Battery which cost £142.99 and was available in 2 days. Fairly straight forward. The hardest part was the brute force needed to get the seat up although it went back easily. As I expected the plastic trim plugs broke (why don't they use screws - this always happens!) but otherwise only took about 30 mins to put new Battery in and she fired up straight away. All good. 😅
