I have my car 6 weeks, 162 Avensis,  electric handbrake, had it one week when all the lights came on dashboard and it said check handbrake system, brought it to garage, he said it was filters and charged me 30 euro and drive on. All lights came on again today and same message on dashboard, check handbrake system. Is this gonna be a big job?

Hi, It could be something very similar to my experience which is simple with the correct mechanic. Was the brake pads or discs changed in the last year. From my post, a lot of mechanics were unable to diagnose a very a simple issue including Toyota, which stemed from not doing a calibration after a brake pad and disc change.

You might just need the 'correct person' that is able to use the software correctly to program it. It was the 5th mechanic for me that sorted it out.

I have now lost faith in the first mechanic I went to, I will bring it to another guy tomorrow and explain what you said, hopefully he can sort it, thanjavur for the reply.

Hi Joanne,

If they have a level diagnostic tool and able able to use it, it might be a cheap fix. If they say you need a replacement module which could be costly, I would get another opinion, let us know how you get on.  It might be just the calibration hopefully.

Update: so 2 mechanics later I'm told it's the Diesel particulate filter, it's blocked so they would remove it and send it off to be cleaned, which would cost around 450 euro, when they went to remove it there was none there,  it was already removed, I got onto the garage I bought it from and he said he didn't know it was removed, he told me drive it on and see would dash lights come on again, lights came on, I sent him a WhatsApp picture of the dashboard and a message and heard nothing back in 2 days, I'm thinking now did I buy faulty goods? Under consumer rights?

Pretty sure he'd be liable for selling it without a DPF, as a trader. What do you have as an analogue of the Citizen's Advice Bureau in Eire? Check with them or Trading Standards.

Hold on, how did they diagnose it as a blocked DPF when there was no DPF?!?!?  It sounds like they just made that up...!

Also, I don't know what the laws are like where you are, but if you were here and given you haven't had the car very long, I'd have recommended you exercise your consumer rights and return it to the dealer and demand a full refund.
