Question about the 12V socket in a Yaris Cross

I've just ordered a new Yaris Cross which should be arriving at the end of May. I was wondering about getting some dashcams for it, but given what I've read about the batteries dying, I didn't want anything that would be drawing extra power all the time with the car turned off.

I assume that the 12V sockets are only powered with the car on (or in ACC mode). Can anyone confirm this?

Also does anyone know how easy it would be to wire in myself and hide all the wires, or am I best getting someone to do this for me?

Thanks

12 volt sockets only have power when in acc and ign mode. Everything powers down when you switch off.
Fitting the cam{s} and hiding the wires is fairly simple. Just take your time and think the process through a bit.
There's probably some genetic tutorials on YouTube about it that might help.

Mine is powered via a hardwired Battery, it powers both front and rear cams , you can get cameras with parking mode which will record events when parked, but these require hardwiring and you usually can buy the separate power saving device, ( they cut off when a certain voltage is reached so as not to drain the car’s battery), if you use the cars 12v socket, well some are powered for for a few minutes, maybe up to 30min, but not sure about the cross, it’s fairly easy to hardwire a dash cam , as chippy says there’s plenty of vids on tinternet, when I do eventually get my car, plan to remove my cameras and fit them to my cross, however, I will probably get them professionally done, just in case I have any issues with any warranty claims in the future, I doubt it will, but you never know…

There have been several threads on adding a Dashcam, from dealer supply & fit to best way to DIY without affecting the airbags. Capabilities of different makes also discussed.

A quick search should help you find them.

You can buy a black box it switches over from car 12 volt socket to its own 12 volt Battery when the car is switched off.

Have seen them on eBay in the past.

Yes I should have mentioned that mine ( blackvue Battery pack) can also be charged from the 12v socket when the car is being driven, for it to then power the camera whilst parked….

I have one, not Blackvue (Cellink), under the front passenger seat. Blackvue front and rear cameras.

It's most definitely not a cheap option but an excellent alternative to powering parking mode from the 12v starting Battery or the 12v Battery in a Hybrid. Presumably that how it works with a Hybrid?

One method

Wire dash cam into a Battery bank and Battery bank into car 12 volt socket.

Note some dashcams run on a 5 volt supply. ie usb port output.

A wise warning Derek. I'm not aware of a dedicated Dashcam Battery that supplies other than 12v. However, the accessory socket plug on those cameras usually reduces the 12v to 5v.

My Blackvues are 12v and the Battery does have a connector for the 12v plug.

Usb ports are 5 volts but then the plug you connect into it may increase that voltage to 9 or 12  volts but then the maximum current drawn is then reduced by the same factor excluding losses.

Dashcam Battery packs are just a Battery pack with one or more ports sometimes the port is also its charging port and if it has only one port without other means of charging you need some sort of splitter device to supply let say input and output ports.

All good suggestions. I'm not overly fussed about parking mode, or certainly not needing it on for a long time. I'd been looking at the Garmin dashcams (as I've had good experiences with their watches) and I believe the cameras have enough in built Battery for about half an hour which would give a short parking mode, or at least the ability to upload any videos when they connect to wifi when I park at home. If I wanted longer than that, these specific black box batteries sound like the best option for me.

The plan would be to plug them both into the 12V socket in the boot using the Garmin dual plug. I just find the thought of trying to wire all the way to the front, and also through the hinge of the boot, a bit daunting. I've seen generic videos but nothing specific to the yaris cross. I think ill wait for it to arrive and check it out/see what the dealership could do about fitting some.

Have a look for an auto electrician or specialist company who fit dash cams ect, all the dealer will do is contact whoever they use to fit your cams and charge you accordingly

Just had a service online checkin for a visit on the 19th.  It is a sales opportunity for additional services and extras.  One is fitting a dash cam at £366.  Rather more than my original delivery price.

Blimey, that went up! It was £250 when I got my Mk4!

If anyone out there has a camera and want more run time then apart from a Battery pack you need a usb voltage converter.

(A other name for it Boost step up power converter).

Best to pick a voltage pack with at least two ports but in part it depends on how you are recharging the pack itself and what else you may plug into it ie tablet or phone for the kids.
