Toyota Yaris 2010 Petrol won't start on Incline

When I park my car on a deep incline it won't start. It makes the ignition noise and then the car starts shaking. The dashboard struggles to turn on and after a while the car will stall. If I keep applying gas it will still struggle but eventually start, but boy it is rough. When I park on a flat surface or a decline it doesn't do this.If I'm parked on a slight incline the car will struggle a bit but starts without all the hassle.

The car:

Toyota Yaris 2010 1.3 Petrol UK

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Sounds like a weird fuelling problem... I've heard of people who've had this where they've had a new fuel tank put in, but it was a third party one and didn't have baffles so all the fuel sloshed to one end and the fuel pickup couldn't suck it up properly, but unless you've had a new fuel tank that seems unlikely.

My initial thoughts are there's some guck in your fuel lines or something that's acting like a valve at certain angles, or there's a cable somewhere which has a bad contact and when it's at that angle the fuel pump isn't getting enough power?

For now, try running a few tanks of V-Power petrol through it and see if that makes any difference first...

I remember that many moons ago I had a Hillman Avenger, (told you it was many moons ago!). It sometimes would not start if parked facing up a hill and very occassionally, would just cut out whilst driving. After some trial and error, I disconnected the fuel pipe from the carburettor. Sticking out the end of the pipe was a strange object. I got my fingers on it and it would move, so I gently pulled it and guesss what it was? A small bud on the end of a 1" twig!! How on earth it had got from the petrol tank, to the carburettor, I have no idea, but the car ran normally after that, (well, until the rust in the drivers footwell allowed me to be a Fred Flintstone!). Not that I am saying you have half a tree in the petrol system @redhyper

Bearing in mind the previous suggestions which could be the cause, it could be a weak fuel pump or even a choked up fuel filter.

Pump or filter sock on the pump or your fuel gauge is off and you have no fuel in the tank, leave at least 1/4 of a tank running it dry or low all the time will kill the pump - the pump is cooled by the fuel

another thing to try is if it is parked on an incline undo the fuel cap before starting it - if that work it is possibly something in the canister vent system

So I tried to record a video of it today. I opened the fuel cap and it started without issue. I then plugged it back in and in started again just fine. It's a cold day so I don't know why it's starting now. Typical.

I always have fuel in the car as I drive a lot.

It's something to do with the vent/purge valve or maybe the charcoal canister its self. it needs more diagnostics to see what things are doing and what the values are, a fault like this is hard to pin down
