Hello

I have a 99 1.3 Starlet Sportif, which i need to service. However, i haven't got the owners manual, so i would like to know:

1. What engine oil should i get?

2. What gearbox oil should i get, and how much do i need?

I usually don't bother with gearbox oil, but the gear chance on the car is awful, really notchy, i hate it.

Usually 10w40 semi-synthetic works best. fully synthetic isn't worth the extra on a N/A car, you will use around 3.1-3.2 litres so get a 5l can so you can top up when needed

You will also need a oil filter and sump washer with it. i cant remember the first 5 numbers of the part no. but if you ask for a 91045 oil filter from a main dealer you cant go wrong

We use 75w90 gear oil at my place. I'm not sure how much goes in a starlet. i will let you know the EXACT amount tomorrow

just looked it up in the repair manual, they take 1.9 litres so get 2.0 litres of 75w90 gear oil

the gear change problem may not be the oil. if the oil looks colden/yellow when it comes out, its fine if its black, its picked up a load of metal filings. if none comes out, it may have done severe damage

you may have worn synchro's, but mine is not silky smooth

i usually use Mobil 1 0w40. for one rather large reason, if the car is parked outside overnight in the middle of winter, regualr 10w40 is almost like treacle when the engine is started up. Mobil 1 is closer to water even at room temperature.

i also find the car starts up much better with Mobil 1, but its a tad expensive.

At our Toyota dealership we use Shell Helix Plus 10/40w Semi-Synthetic.

Mobil 1? we have had GT4's and supras with glazed bores with Mobil one. I normally use Castrol as my car is sponsered by it! :D check the decals on a SR to see what I mean

Thats what I am! I'm currrently a 3rd year apprentice

I will get my NVQ lvl 3 in approx 2 months time and toyota liscened in march

If you are around 16-19, you have a chance and you also need C or higher in maths and english GCSE

basically, you need to be switched on. not some deadhead. you have tests to be accecpted. fortunatly, i done very well in my exams and was given the choice of :toyota, volvo, vauxhall and chrysler. I think i made to right (and only!!!) choice

if you get on the program, it is worth it!!!

the one you are thinking of is :Toyota World Bristol North. its still going. we used to be arriva also. but us, patchway and weston (formally jeff browns) were bought out by the Sytner group, part of united auto which is owned by one "Roger Penske" (of indy cart fame who I have met when he came down to visit us PERSONALLY!)
