Unsure what this warning light is (photo)

2006 Corolla  2Lt diesel estate.

I noticed this warning light yesterday. I was thinking that it was brake fluid. I checked fluid reservoir level and was ok, only put a tad in. Light still on so I checked coolent level and put a bit in. Light is still on, so I am stumped now.

Can anyone advise what the light is for and what the fault can be.  What can I  check next? Thank you.

The light I am referring to is the yellow one at the bottom on the temperature clock. Is on whether the car is running or even just with ignition on.

If into diy, you can buy a cheapo OBD2 reader that you plug in and read off the error code.

They also allow you to quickly Reset the MIL light if its not a 'hard' fault.

Thank you Oldcodger. It is a route I am currently trying to navigate.

Like you I feel there is potential for a DIY fix for this. Gone are the days when only main dealers had the monopoly. As is often  the case China are producing these testing devices,  and there are a myriad to choose from on various retail platforms, such as E  BAY for example.

I asked an online retailer if xyz tester would be ok for my car. It did say 'for Japanese cars' so what could possibly go wrong? 😂  I expanded on that and mentioned it is a corolla. The guy requested the VIN details to be sure, which gave me confidence.  It seems no on the original £40 tester discussed.

I don't mind taking a punt of £40, but it does make sense to ask questions and do a bit of homeworm. Not the cheapest one but hopfully not a micky mouse one. It transpired that a tester of around £20 is the one I need! But, it is not in stock.

Fortunately I have the time and patience to pursue this-I understand not everyone does, and that some need their car back on the road ASAP!

I will keep the forum  posted on my progress.

Be very careful with lower end scan tools on early to mid 2000's diesels as most will not talk to the car

you can try the flash test

link 2 pins on the DLC connector, turn the ignition on and count the flashes
