Presume this is Auto Express. However, there are several articles in the same vein from various companies (Auto Express, What Car, Carwow, Parkers, etc, etc) and they all give different 'Top 10s'.

The Mk4 Yaris is a cracking little car though, I loved mine.  We also use taxis daily for work and most of the brand new ones are Corollas and they are very popular with the drivers.  I’d have either if I didn’t need AWD.  I’ll certainly consider a Corolla when I retire.  Kia/Hyundai are very good cars but I keep hearing stories about engine problems.  Some of the guys at work with Sportage’s have had serious issues.

The funny thing is the japanese Yaris and Corollas both have AWD as an option!! (And 360 degree cameras, self parking etc. etc). I e-mailed Toyota about this ages ago but just got their normal boilerplate response about what the British market wants... (I'll tell you what we want Toyota - Heated seats and steering wheels on top-spec models!! Brrrrr winter so coooldd...)

I'm surprised the Corolla wasn't higher up given the Yaris somehow got the #1 spot (I suppose if real world mpg has a significant weighting in the choice then I can see it - The Mk4's fuel economy is insane; I just got back from hauling 3 people, 2 of them quite heavy  from London to Leicester to go to the Retro computing museum (If any of you have any interest in old computers and video games I highly recommend a visit - Their archives alone are incredible! And if you want your kids to experience olde worlde games consoles it's a fun day out!) and despite hammering it all the way there and back at barely legal speeds the car reported a tank average of 68mpg by the time I got home!!)

The Civic hybrid by all accounts is very good tho' and deserves to be up there, but I'm very surprised the Jazz hybrid isn't in there at all - It's the Mk4's closest rival, and while it doesn't have anywhere near the driving dynamics of the Mk4, it has a much more practical interior and similar efficiency.

It's Toyota UK's way of getting you to buy a top end Yaris Cross!  😋

The roads in London are the worst in the whole country.
The potholes are so huge and everywhere, even on the motorways between the lanes. If you are changing a lane be prepared for that nice loud thud and cracking noise from flying stones , worst in rainy weather at dark as you literally can’t see the craters. No wonder yard cross are selling like a hot cake.  Perhaps a lift up kits will be the next upgrade.
Btw up North  the road infrastructure it’s much much better. Recent visit to Yorkshire and I was surprised. Motorways and A roads are way better, and if you think they are not, imagine what is in London and south east. 🌘🚧

Unless you are one of those chavs who despite being in start stop traffic love to floor it for 1 metre travel, slam break then repeat.

To be fair they have been patching up some of them, but someone is just making some bizarre choices - There are several places where they've re-surfaced a huge chunk of road to get rid of all the potholes, with the same beautifully smooth and silent stuff I've mentioned before, but only gone part way and stopped short of where there are more potholes! Why not just resurface the whole section!?

It's been pretty bad tho', worse than I remember for a while - I can't help feeling it's because so many people are driving big fat stupid needlessly heavy cars like SUVs and worse SUV EVs everywhere... (I'm particularly grumpy toward them as I've been stuck behind a lot of them lately in situations where I could easily pass through a gap, but they're too scared too and hold all of us up until the other side clears! Worse when there're two of them and they're both too scared to pass each other! :wallbash:)

That’s always been the case , the most unsuitable cars people love and buy.
All that SUV’s has real use but not in London obviously. Something small like Yaris cross or similar is very acceptable as these cars are actually so tiny and light, YC it’s actually a lifted up Yaris and only looks bigger on pictures but actually in reality it’s a small car , smaller than Corolla hatchback.

The increased numbers of EVs doesn't help as these can be up to 30% heavier than equivalent ICE cars, with a possible detrimental impact on road surfaces.

Indeed, and lately was published a worrying statement of architect that said the weight of evs can put extra stress on already old multi storey car parks and there is potential risk of collapse.
it was broadcasted  last week on the news. Make sense to me as any ev has between 300-700kg extra mass over the petrol or hybrid variants.
Make me think avoid these car parks as possible. 👍
