Yaris Hybrid - Dashcam hardwiring (Mk3)

Hello

I did some testing before attempting to hardwired my Viofo Dashcam and found that the empty slots (on the right side in the picture) had 12.4v after the car was locked for over 40mins so I installed the tap for live mode to the CIG slot in the middle and the one for parking mode in the one that seemed to maintain the 12v output. Unfortunately, I finished wiring the Dashcam and everything seemed to work fine. however, when I switched the car off the Dashcam switched to parking mode, however, when I locked the car it switched off after around 2 minutes. I am now doubting myself and wondering if I actually tested the wrong slot so instead of testing each one again I thought I would post a question here in the hope that someone else has already done this and can assist.

Thank you in advance

Maybe there’s some residual voltage in the fuses but the load of your camera simply uses it up.  Test it again with the camera disconnected.

I've not hardwired mine in with the correct kit yet, still using the Nextbase kit with only 2 wires.

You need red to a constant live and the parking mode wire will need to find one that comes live when ignition turned on,you will just have to go round with a tester

Just re read your post again , try swapping your wires around , I think you may of wired your constant live to the acc feed.

Thank you so much @tfc for taking the time to assist.

I managed to fix the issue. Turns out I had been silly and had the voltage adjustment slider set to 12.40. The voltage drops to 12.34 or thereabouts after you switch off the car and so the Dashcam does what it is supposed to do and power itself off assuming that the voltage is too low. Changing the slider to 12.0v fixed the issue. I only managed to take a fresh look at the whole set up again last night and noticed.

I hope this helps someone and thank you once again 🙂

Your welcome.👍

Have you checked your voltage in the morning before you start it up ? I am going to hard wire mine with the 3 wire kit and was wondering if setting it to 12v was still to high after the car has been standing for some time.

I do not recommend setting it to 12.0V
In winter, you will have a voltage of 11.6V in the morning
After starting the camera, the voltage drops below 10.5V

Parking mode normally uses internal Battery in Dashcam and not vehicle power - for obvious reasons. Parking mode also switches on/off dependant on vehicle being disturbed.

If Dashcam comes on with ignition, then it’s fine: As long as the fused slot is ignition supply only.

It's highly dependent on the dashcam; If they use a 3-wire system they often will use the 12v Battery power in park mode - Viofos do this as they have capacitors and not batteries so can't run without 12v power for long.

My old one did have a Battery and would switch to that when it lost power and went to park mode but would only run for a few hours.

There are power packs designed like UPS' so they can charge and supply power simultaneously but for some reason they're a lot more expensive than normal power packs

Viofo dashcams hardwire kits (the ones we are using) use 3 wires as they have a capacitor  instead of a internal Battery .

Checked the Battery voltage, the car as not moved since about 11am Thursday morning , just been out and checked voltage and its 11.57 volts so I think I'll set mine at the lowest setting 11.8v.

One thing I did notice if l switch ign on to Acc the voltage starts to rise slowly , after about 20 secs it risen to 11.60v and that is with the radio on, I'll recheck it again tomorrow but one thing that came to mind is if the Battery is low and switching the ign to Acc is it possible that the hybrid battery is actually putting juice into the 12v battery?

I'll try it again tomorrow and I'll also put the heater on that's if it works in Acc mode. If it puts voltage back into the battery that could solve the problem of having a flat battery after been parked up for a while. I might be talking a load of bull.

I doubt it as you don't hear the contactors click at the back, and if it was the voltage should be in the 14's.

It's more likely the Battery is just recovering from delivering a surge of power - People have mentioned the brake servo pump can activate when you unlock or open the doors, and that would pull a lot of juice for a moment and cause voltage sag, so my guess would be that.

Ahh, OK. Our Nextbase have internal batteries, so no need for perm +ve.
