oil leak

hey i have a 2006 manual rav 4 diesel 2.2 i took it to get a clutch and when i picked it up the mechanic told me the seal between the transfer box and gear box had a leak i now know from other mechanics that they would replaced this whilst they were in the car but he put everything back and want to charge me nearly £500 for the privilege of taking the things out he just had out and putting them back in again do you know what others would charge for thius

What a place and mechanic?! Why not noted while car been apart and new seal fitted? Look around for another mechanic, search Google maps and read reviews, these are more realistic than any other, and particularly the bad ones .
