I've a 1991 Previa GL which was originally fitted with a Radio Cassette head Unit and CD Player. The 2 units connect together via a 13 Pin DIN Plug/Socket and a flying cable on the CD Head.

A previous owner has binned the OEM CD Head and fitted a cheap and nasty Goodmans :censor: CD/Radio. The OEM Radio Cassette is still there, but disconnected...

I've sorted out a replacement OEM CD Unit as part of a "job lot" from eBay. The lot includes an 8/12 CD head unit, a Radio Cassette (Jap spec, so not much use in the UK without a band expander) and an HDT 120 8/12 CD Auto Changer...

I will be stripping out the dash to removed the offensive CD/Radio and check out the butchery within... But before I start, has anyone fitted one of these Jap spec changers to a UK previa? I can't see where the changer connects to the head unit... (all avaliable connectors are occupied...)

I did try asking my local Toymota Dealer (who was damn helpful, by the way), but as interconnect cables are accessories and Toyota will not offer a refund against incorrectly ordered accessories, I thought it a little too risky to chance the £56  for a cable that "might do the job"...

So, If anyone had migrated a Jap spec Lucida/Emina stereo to their UK Previa... c'mon, let's have all the juicy bits...

Failing that... anyone in the market for an HDT 120 8/12 changer (condition unknown) or a Goodmans CD/Radio (never raced or rallied...)

i had to repace the dual stereo on my previa (sorry but it wasnt to a changer like yours) but i did run into problems in bypassing the amp unit fitted in the passenger footwell, as all the connections for the stereo seem to run thru' it! maybe the jap spec previas didnt have this?

Interesting that... I had adopted the normal position to fill up the Bus's gearbox the other day and was wondering what the two connectors were that are poking out from under the dash on the passenger side... I think you may have given me a clue here...

Did the amp have two, white, multi-way connectors? One with about twice as many pins as the other?

Does this mean that the OEM units won't work at all without a separate amplifier? :ffs:

Does this also mean that my eBay bargain has turned into a useless pile of doo-doo?

Where's that razor... :crybaby:

Oh well... I'll rip the lungs out of it anyway, just to see what the gash :censor: who owned it last got up to in there...

hello miti,

yes the amp did have the 2 connections you describe (the larger for the Speakers, the other for the power, as far as i can tell!) plus another connector coming off it which was something else to do with the power or maybe the stereo alarm, again i am only guessing!

i utilsed these first 2 connections by removing the wires from the white blocks (carefully so as not to damage the actual connectors) and then sticking the wires into an din flying wire (from a mondeo actually!) which in turn goes into the back of the stereo. the problems i had was finding out where each wire went (quite a few blown fuses!) and if i remember right there was no permanent live feed, so i took that off the fuse box. i think it does mean you will need an amp to run those units

i still have the original stereo and amp so if there is any info on them you would like then just ask. the thing i found with this stereo set up is there is no reference to it in any manuals, however i have seen the same units in a G reg MR2, so maybe that might be a way to get more info. anyway i hope this helps you, good luck with that dash!

Cheers for that...

If you can decipher the part numbers (there will most certainly be more than one of them) and let me know, I may be able to get a pin-out from http://www.carstereohelp.com They've been good in the past and may be able to help.

Ta muchly.
