Rav4.3 SR180 D4D - Hesitation Knocking Smoke

Hi all,

I've been browsing the forum and read over many white smoke topics on the d4d but can't find exactly the issue I'm facing.

My rav4 is on 79k miles and lately has begun smoking Whiteish under acceleration but not clouds, at 2krpm the car can Hesitate or stumble slightly on part throttle and over 2krpm any load causes a knocking noise.

Toyota techstream has checked the DPF and given it a bill of health, there was a P0400 at one point and a P1386, both EGR and 5th injector were replaced which stopped the clouds of smoke a few months ago.

Currently there is no fault codes and the live data is all within parameters, yet still the issues.

MAF has been cleaned, the fuel filter is 6 months old, and the cars done about 2000miles since last service, currently running miller's ecomax cleaner incase it is dirty injectors but so far no change.

Mpg was 23avg before 5tg injector and EGR were done, and currently 28mpg average which is lower than it use to be at around 30-32avg.

The car is booked in for diagnostics at a diesel specialist in 2 weeks, but til then I was hoping to do some investigation myself.

Any thoughts or advice on this please?

Cheers

Chris

Does the smoke smell of anything in particular? My thick white smoke smelled of unburned fuel, and while the smoke is now gone (deprogrammed 5th injector) behind the car still really smells the same.

Nothing particularly noticeable, doesn't smell sweet like coolant, or smell like diesel

Initially it did smell like the millers eco max fuel additive as that's got a particular chemical smell

Update

It's went into my local dealership and they diagnosed the car with faulty EGR and 5th injector due to being none OEM.

I pointed out that they are Genuine Denso parts and even came in the Toyota boxes, so they changed subject quickly.

They have also done the latest software update free of charge (which they had quoted me £120 to do) and no mention of the DPF or the Injectors being an issue.

They recommend putting some miles on the car to see how it behaves with the new software.

Not sure if I had the apprentice poking at the techstream computer, because there were no fault codes when I scanned it on techstream myself this morning prior to dropping it in.

£114 for a day of diagnostics and no real definitive answer 😕

Any ideas?

Further update, put about 20miles on tonight with mixed driving and seemed to behave.

Also looking at the documents from the diagnostics, mileage in was 79066, mileage out 79066.

No sure how they managed to road test it to confirm their diagnostics....

  • 3 weeks later...

Well the car came back from Toyota with a fuel leak, but the map seems to have cured the smoking.

Now to find where the fuel leak is from, as the filter area is clean and so is the pump area.
