40% of supermarket charging points are out of order .....

This article sort of confirms our recent experience with public charging points

https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/electriccars/article-11658043/Two-five-supermarket-electric-car-chargers-not-working.html

The numbers are terrible, they say a whopping 50% of chargers at Morrisons are out of service.

This may well be one of the reasons behind the recent big drop in interest shown in EV's and worryingly it may hit resale values of the bZ4X

Seems this is not confined the the UK, over in the US a similar picture is emerging:

Agree - public charging network is awful, I went to North Devon. Hardly any chargers & the ones I did find mostly didn't work. If they want the tourism they are going to have to sort this.

Interestingly our local Morrisons (Chippenham) rapid charger never works, but if I use my own type 2 cable & plug into the 7kw slow charger it works fine & although i swipe my payment card I never get charged 🙂

Yeah it's pretty disgraceful; The thing is they're just forging ahead installing new chargers everywhere and boasting about it too, but nobody seems to be maintaining them once they're in, so despite loads of chargers having been installed the actual number of useable chargers across the country has stayed roughly the same!

This is why I'm only going to even look at them again when one that can do my 99% use-case comes on the market, as I want to avoid public charging completely except for proper long distance road trips where I'd have to stop anyway.

It's pretty depressing the stats on charger availability but beggars the question why are they so unreliable? They are hardly the most complex technology that's being deployed and yet I see so many with signs indicating they are unavailable.  Maybe the competing companies with differing designs need to come up with a common charging pod design and interface to increase the build quantity/quality and improve reliability and therefor availability.

As @Cyker says it does not encourage people to take the step of faith to move to a BEV.

Who is to blame then?
It seems installing, maintaining and owning an evs public chargers it’s not a viable business, otherwise there will be tons of privately owned companies that would love to buy and own a charger. Something it’s not right on top level imo. Bev”s are great cars with slightly limited use add the negative point of public chargers in reality, add the expensive Battery pack that will require replacement after 10+ years and you will see why they are cheaper than any other cars offered as second hand. My predictions already started to happen exactly as I said back in 2020 that the bev’s will create a shortage of ice and hybrids, will rise the price of those to sky high levels and there will be a lots of bev’s for sale at cheaper prices that no one would want to touch.

That's a great question !

Are there are issues with chargher locations, getting permissions to use / rent the land ?

Do they get big subsidies to install, this gov.uk webpage says "up to 75% grants..."

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/government-grants-for-low-emission-vehicles

Perhaps installing is lucrative, but after care not, hence the high numbers of chargers out of service for long periods of time ?

London is No1 city in Europe for having the most public chargers available, my local super market has only 2 charging points and I see the same 2 cars are on it no matter which day I drive pass.

London has plenty of public chargers and many of those are even still free. My gf has her ev since April 2021 and she had over 13000 miles and only ever paid 3 times for charging, actually twice as the third one was me paying 😂👍 few weeks ago on a longer trip. She has no her own charger and relays only on public ones. Luckily she has one at her home place and few more around her. 👍
