Help with boot height!

Recommended Posts

Posted

My neighbour has just taken over her late husband's ch-r.  She is about 4 foot 6 inches tall and cannot reach the boot lid to close it once its open.  No help at all from the local dealership; would any of you kind people be willing to suggest something that she can do?  I initially thought there'd be somewhere inside the boot lid that I could perhaps thread a bit of rope from, so she could pull the boot down but there's nothing!!  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.  Thank you.

She has my (or at least my wife's) sympathy - she too struggles to close the boot on her C-HR. And while I have done nothing to help so far here are a handful of suggestions:

  1. Use a loft latch closing pole to grab the grab handle inside the tailgate - e.g. Coat Hanger Pole, Telescopic Closet Hook
  2. Use a C clamp to grip the edge of the grab handle inside the tailgate and attach a cord - pretty much as you originally thought.
  3. Get a purpose made Boot Strap
  4. Use a couple of lengths of paracord to restrict the opening height as per this YouTube video:

Or splash out on an powered tailgate lift kit and fitting ,if feasible.

Less complicated and a lot cheaper of course, are Phillips suggestions.

That does look pretty swish

Makes me kinda want a powered boot for my Yaris, even tho' it'd be totally stupid.

I do wonder if you could get away with a suction cup on the glass with a cord attached to it; Might be able to use that to pull it down just enough to grab the back?

Try carrying a plunger in your boot

Phylip42h, Rhymes with Paris, Cyker, Frostyballs and Bernard Foy: THANK YOU, one and all!!  For the genuine suggestions and the more amusing ones, I am truly grateful and I know my neighbour will be forever grateful once she settles on the final fix.  If I can find my way back, I'll happily update you all with a photo of her final fix choice.  God bless x x

Use a old dog leader strap and jusr bolt it to a lock bolt with a washer on the top or you can attach it to the strut at the side you prefer.

My C-HR has a warning not to pull the tailgate sideways when closing it.  Sounds a bit crazy to me, but caution is the best option.  With this in mind, I would advise against using the side strut as this suggests causing a sideways pull, which is contrary to the advice given.

You use all attachments closing aids in a downward movment until you can use its recessed handle and on most if not all cars its location is off center.

Fair comment and, yes, my recessed handle is well to the right of the tailgate.

I would have thought the tailgate hinge assembly is robust enough to prevent any sideways pull and, unless one found a way to act foolishly, I find it difficult to see how a sideways pull could be effected.

Hi Alice, I’m curious as to what fix your neighbor finally settled on. Blessings on you too.
