I have just purchased a 96 RAV4 MAX and apart from the shock of the fuel consumption having had a diesel car previously I'm pleased with it. I do have a curious clicking noise coming from around the fuel tank/filler area (no bomb jokes please) It has a regular tempo and does not speed up with the speed of the car. Is there a pump/relay in the tank or is this a fault with the petrol flap lock any idea's anyone?

Toyota petrol tanks are preasurised to aid fuel flow to the engine - you can tell this by the hiss of air when you undo the fuel filler cap after driving for a while. I would guess - but it is only a guess - that there would be some kind of preasure release valve for safety. May be it's constantly having to release preasure from the tank?

Just found this on the Yahoo group RAV4, it may explain your problem????

>They also checked the 4x4 systems and transmition but, found everything is in

order.

>So, I agree to leave my car with them for further analysis. After 2 days, they

found out what the problem was. It was the breather line of the fuel tank that

was

clocked up which caused a vacuum condition in the gas tank and when it reached a

certain pressure level, the dirt that blocked the breather line was

somehow cleared so the shrinking (more of bending) gas tank pops back into the

original shape and gave out that knocking sound.

Maybe you breather line is obstructed in some way, either with dirt or being bent out of shape?
