And how do they know that ?

If two insurace cannot put the blame on either party then its called knock for knock I beleve and each insurer picks up their clients bill.

That’s nothing to do with my question…

You said “insurance companies take into account the price you payed against ther book price”….

I asked you to explain how they know that I paid a pre-registered price for the car ?

The price you paid for the car is irrelevant for the insurance company - if your car is totally destroyed, they refer to a 'look-up' table for its current value, based on age and mileage, service history etc and (perhaps) number of owners. For a nearly-new car they really don't care if you paid well over or under the 'usual' price, they are only obliged to get you back to where you were pre-destruction

In the event of a total loss claim they may request a copy of the purchase invoice.

Being a very cynical person, I suspect the insurance company would only do this if it was to their advantage

I would agree with Keith, I had twice written off cars and and never been asked  about what I paid for or any invoice.

The small print in my LV Multicar policy certainly contains a clause whereby they reserve the right to request an invoice or other evidence of purchase.
