if the rust isnt too bad then, remove, treat with a rust inhibiting primer (finnigans No1 is pretty good as long as you dont break through it when rubbing down). finnish and spray.

then get 5 ltrs of Waxoil (availiable at most places) warm it up then apply a nice thick layer every where rust/ wate collection is a problem ie iside the bottom of doors, chassis box sections and where the 1/4 panel meets the wheelhouse ( remove the rear 1/4 trim inside the boot and you'll see the area i mean) then treat the area behind the wheels with some black stone chip guard.

but the most important thing is act early, if the rust has gone beyond the surface rust stage then its better to remove the affected area to a point about 1" around the rust and replace the panel.

A few tips on slowing down rust damage:

If you have a garage for your car try not to put the car in damp/wet, always leather/dry off before putting away.

Paint old engine oil onto the undersides (old trick this, used to be done in the 50's and 60's). Its free and gets rid of waste oil as well ...Messy Job (be careful if you have a nice driveway!), but do it a couple of times a year (ask local garage if they will spray some on). Also if you have sensitive skin wear gloves.

Wax oil is good but not as amazing as some people claim. Use Wax oil inside Doors and most importantly Box sections/ chassis rails.

Remember you are only slowing down the process, if you use a car regulary in a damp climate (i.e. Great Britain) rust will get it in the end!
